Battery Charging Question

I recommend the optimate III also...I actually spliced into the permanent connector and added wire to extend the length from the factory 10 inch length or so...When I installed my remote starter, i ran the permanent connection so the plug was right by my handle bars...so now when i get back from a ride, i dont have to pull off the side panel or anything, i simply plug in the unit by the handle bars and im good to go...Nothing like an optimate... Then when I want to ride, it takes 10 seconds to unplug it and im ready to go...

I use a Battery Tender and purchased several of the lead sets for each one of my toys. Both bikes, the quad and the sled. Just rotate the charger every 5-7 days on each toy. Works awesome.

The only problem with the battery tender above is you can't hook it up and forget it. The Optimate III is foolproof, connect for the summer and no worries. Will bring back batteries that are near dead. I bought 2 for my kids for Christmas here - great price--

Apex Battery Won't Take a Charge

My Apex died, wouldn't turn over or take a charge so I installed a new OEM battery. I have a 12 volt 1 amp trickle charger that I put on for 6 hours and the battery didn't have any power. The engine still turned over and started but barely. Am I using the wrong battery charger? The manual states to use a "special constant voltage" charger and not a conventional charger.

Thanks

Sorry to revive an old thread here, but haven't found the answers I'm looking for after running a few searches.

Does anyone have much experience with using one of the CTEK chargers while the battery is still connected? The owners manual suggests disconnecting the battery before using this charger. Not sure if that's to protect the sled's electronics, improve the charging process, or both.

I've been using a Battery Tender Jr for years on both the bikes and the sleds. It is good for maintenance charging, but I'm trying to revive a weak battery.

So not true. I have 7 battery tender jrs that I leave hooked up for months at a time. Have never had ANY issue. Now My friends keep buying crappy no name float chargers for a couple bucks less. Only last a year or two, and one way overcharged his battery. Not saying that the optimate is not a great unit, as I have one, but for simple maintainence....hard to beat the batterytender jrs (also cheaper than the optimate by far)

Street,

I dot see any reason you could not leave the battery hooked up to the sled it will not be getting excessive voltage i think they say that cause they dont want any draw on the battery while tring to charge. will it help maybe but i dont think thease sleds have any draw while sitting over keeping the clock correct.

So just to clarify, once using the proper charger, you CAN charge through the leads that hang out the right side?

I really don't want any issues, so if there's any chance this isn't a good idea, I suppose I will pull it apart just to get to the battery.

Regards

I have charged 2 sleds per year for the last seven years through the leads without any issues. I use a Battery Tender and only charge them up once a week but have left them on for 3 days and no problems.

I have Battery Tender Jr.'s on all the toys, sleds, waverunners, motorcycle, leave them plugged in from the end of their season till the beginning of their next season of use with no issues. Also since using them, I have never had to change a battery in any of them.

Only issue with leaving a battery tender on is if it is a vented battery. It will evaporate the acid at rate of about 1.5 inches a month.

I have another question along this line..... would it be possible to charge the battery through the aux 12 volt cigaratte lighter style port on the dash?
