Battery tenders...

Anyone use one of these? Dealer recommended it. Said it will extend the life of the battery. I am kind of curious about it however.. any thoughts?

Yeah I think it is a very good idea and have been doing it for years. I recently sold a 97 VMax with the original battery so that proves to me it works. Batteries if they are allowed to sit discharged will sulfate the plates.

I really like the Optima (optimate?) charger that Yamaha sells. The 05 sleds had a white plug by the jumper cable extensions that plugged right into it.

When I added reverse and electric start to my Viper (so I could pawn it off on my wife), the battery wasn't fully charged and it froze SOLID before there was enough snow to ride. I tried to bring it back with a regular charger with no success. I bought the Optimate charger and somehow it came back to life. Just about paid for itself the first time I used it. Best charger IMO.

Does the Apex have that white plug for the battery tender?

My apex has been sitting at my dealer and I havent picked it up so I honestly dont know.

Very good point earlier, that a discharged battery can freeze where a fully charged one wont, and yes the optimate can repair batteries in many cases where a maint. free trickle charger cant.

I bought one last year. I don't leave it connected all the time but they do an excellent job of charging a battery. I was able to bring my lawntractor battery back to life after sitting for over 1 year. For deep cycle batteries they do take a while to charge though.
Bottom line - I highly recommend them.

They absolutely work. I have the battery tender, and a inexpensive tent sale floater. The Optimate is probably one of the best one out. I plan on getting a Optimate next. The Optimate will put a test phase in the process as well. I highly recommend any one of them.

MY APEX IS IN< HOME ON THURSDAY

I need to get one. Apparently there was a test done on some batteries. Some were dead and could not be charged with a conventional charger, but this Optimate brought them back to life.

Where is this white plug? I just installed a Battery Tender lead on my 05 RX1 and never saw it.

Was this only on the RS series?

First I've heard of this white cable to plug right in too!

I've put Battery Tender cables on all 3 of my 4 strokes & didn't see or know anything about it!!!

Is it on the 06s or not?

Get my Attak Friday so, I can look then!

on the apex there are two leads that come over the top of the battery. My dealer has the tender that just plugs right into them.

Using an Optimate...have not purchased a new battery in 6 years(not counting the new ones that came with my sleds in 03 and 05), but the Optimate is just that easy. . . Plug it in and forget it.
