Hey guys just so everyone is aware of this when checking your oil , you are not suppose to screw in dip stick. I always screwed mine in when checking oil level. When I down loaded the manual off this website I found this on page 2-20 it states remove dip stick wipe it clean and set dip stick in hole without screwiing it in. Maybe to some people this common sense but I never new this. If you screw it in and check your oil you will be almost 1 quart low. Hope this helps someone.

You are also supposed to run it then let it idle for a minute before checking it so the dry sump system seeks it's proper level. kviper

No, do not check it when the engine is running. The manual says to first let the engine warm up for 10-15 minutes. Park the sled on a level surface and then with the engine off check the level with the dipstick just setting on the threads (not screwed in) as stated above.

Manuals? .... We don't need no stinking manuals! LOL Just kidding, the manuals (especially the service manual) are great sources of information.

Almost all "screw in" dipsticks are supposed to be read this way no matter what manufacturer.

ppwhite: Not sure I follow your logic if you screw dip stick in @ full level you will get a flase high reading too much oil. You would have to be a quart down or so to get full reading if srewed in. You must have seen it reading high at one time or another. Yes? No?

If you change your oil and screw in dipstick it will show you fill reading when fill. Thats what i did then, I was reading the manual after I did the oil, then I unscrewed the the dip stick which brings the dipstick out of the oil tank further which will show lower level then it should be by almost a quart.

You check the oil when it is hot. You do NOT screw in the dipstick to check it. If the dipstick reads full and you have it screwed in, your oil tank will actually be low. Not a full quart low. But, low. On mine, < 1/2 quart is the difference.
I think this is what you guys were saying. Right?

Len Todd that is my understanding should read full unscrewed when hot. I did add 1/2 quart oil after 500 mile break in oil change to top at about 2,000 miles but figured rings still seating. Changed oil, again at 2400 miles for spring oil change & don't have enough miles this year to see if usesage stopped.

Yep!
Good practice to change oil at 500 miles too. I typically get the filter then too.
