I disagree with Len's advice of using a belt until it blows. It is most likely to blow when there is a lot of power being transmitted. i.e the worst possible time. Even though there are guards to protect from the damage caused by a blown belt, I have seen belts fail in ways that they cause other damage such as tearing through the lower coolant hose, not worth the risk. Take a look at the belt periodically especially after a few thousand miles of riding. At the first sign of delamination/fraying, replace it.

When is the last time you caught one before it blew apart?

I checked mine at the begining of the season, I would guess 5 thousand miles on it. It had a chunk out of the top. First time I ever caught one in 30 years

I have never blown a Yamaha 8DN belt ever, but I never try to either. I would not recommend blowing a belt, I have seen all kinds of damage in the engine compartment caused by a belt blown at high speed WOT. I would change it long before it reaches lower tolerance of 32.5 millimeter width. Usually I change the belt after 1 millimeter wear, I get 2000+ miles or 3200+ kms on them.

I recommend periodical maintenance of the clutches and a belt check while at it, when the belt reaches a set amount of wear I would keep a closer eye on it to catch it before it breaks. I've managed to avoid blowing belts for a decade... but that's me

blew the outer off of mine a few weeks ago. i was not nice to it. it did some trail breaking (less than 20kph), towed logs out of the bush and towed 2 sleds in muni this year. went with a bang so i stopped to check it and found outer layer missing.
