Hi Guys,
I wasn't sure where to post this topic, but since I primarily read the Phazer forum I figured I'd post here. Anyhow, my friends and I would like to try to go riding the first weekend in December and we are wondering what's out best bet? We were thinking Houghton, MI but heard that if they don't have a ton of snow that you really need to be carefull for rocks. We would be willing to drive anywhere in Wisconsin or the UP of Michigan. Newberry, Marquette, Seeney? Please excuse my spelling. Just looking for opinions from people that have experience.
Thanks,
Tom

Early season, you need to stick to the trails as there will not be enough snow to cover up all the rocks and downed trees. The Keeweenaw Peninsula is your best bet for early season riding, which is Houghton and north. They will start grooming once they have sufficient snow. I rode about 1000 miles up there last year in mid December. Lodging isn't a problem before Christmas.

Don't worry, we were already planning on being up in Houghton for the TY ride!

Don't need to go quite as north as hougton, just a few miles south of mass city is where the snow belt really starts and the difference in snow depths can get big quick. Twin lakes area is a bit south of houghton but is on higher ground so they are generally more likely to have a few more inches on the ground. Here are a few pics from december 1st last year,
There could be snow like that again or there could be next to nothing, just depends when the storms hit and if it stays cold enough so it does not melt. We trailered to mass city and unloaded there.

If you look for the tread called "I'm riding already guys!" there are a few links to some pics of me riding this winter !!!

Hi Guys! Any snow reports from up north in the UP? Do you have any snow on the ground yet?

Looks like they got about 2-4 inches in most places, and some of the eastern U.P probably has 8+ inches. Go to johndee.com and then go to NCN and then you can look at webcams from all over the place.
