Best options for Slider wear?

Well first sliders lasted 800 miles and would have lasted longer if I stayed of trail. Put new sliders on and at 100 miles there is half left. Rode with an old 600 sdi today gade that has 10000k on it on second set of sliders. His second set still has more then mine do at 100 miles. What makes doos so much better on sliders then yamaha's? I noticed that there slides are much wider but that can not make up for thousands of miles.

Where is everyone getting there marginal snow kit? Scratchers are not and option. I have over 1" of slack in the track too. My wear is between the 1st and second wheels. The tip up and curved part is fine and like new. Even my last slides I took off were like that but the worn section was paper thin.

Bought the marginal snow kit from dealer. Lost my slides in 30 miles of hard ice packed trails. Off trail wasnt any better as everything is rock hard. All my old sliders are sitting on my track clips!

Our trails are not going to be much different then yours right now. They are getting hard and icy with this warm weather.

After only getting three hundred miles and really only baking the slides in the last thirty I just bought and installed the marginal snow kit. Have not tried yet with the kit installed. Will let you know how it goes.

Maybe you need to loosen your track some. I would keep loosing it unttil it slips under acceleration and then tighten it up a little.

i was on the way to wearing out my sliders in a few hundred km's and then i put scratchers on and for this year i loosened the track a little bit. i still stop every once in a while to see that enough snow is getting kicked up and kick some extra snow in but my slider wear reduced drastically just by adding the scratchers last year.

Used to run 135 mm bombi idler wheels on my srx and viper to keep the slides alive longer. Bombi wheels are 3-4 mm larger in diameter. Have not converted my rtx over yet but will be doing that soon when replacing hyfax.

I think the best "fix" that we riders can do is add extra idler wheels, but not the Yamaha wheel kit as those wheels are too small and do not last.

I'd look into finding an axle that would fit in between the rails and mount wheels on that axle. I feel it would have the best durability however finding a spot in your suspension without it interfering with any suspension components could be a problem.

The other method would be to get a Skidoo wheel support to mount the idler wheel. The Yammy one only requires one bolt to mount their support versus Skidoo's two bolt mounting method. This would result in a far stronger mount to the rail.

One must be careful when considering larger idler wheels also. A larger wheel may ease slider wear considerably, however the larger wheels will sustain greater weight/pressure transferring it into the supports, flexing the rails and possibly causing cracks in the rails, hence why I feel that an axle for the wheels would be best. Keeping the idler wheels stock sized may be best, your choice.

Are your slides worn through or just showing wear? Mine wore down fast in the first couple hundred miles but I left them on there. I finally changed them at 3,000 miles, just because. They could have gone more. Yamaha's slides seem to burn down fast to a certain point and then wear like iron. Most people see the slide worn more in one spot than another and think the slides are gone and change them. Of course the next pair do the exact same thing!

what phazerman 2000 said, do not try to protect the first 2/3 of the wear, the last millimeters before worn out last a long time.

My last sliders I changed them with about 1-2 mm of plastic left. It was thin enough that I can press with my thumb and push out the back side. Think this would still last?

So the yamaha marginal kit is no good then because it does not last long. It sounds like Doo wheels are an option, just lots of work to get them on. Not sure if I am up for that. Maybe Hyperfax? Reading good reports on them.

I ordered 4 wheels from dennis kirk for my xtx to replace all of the outside small wheels. They use a 6205 bearing but I was able to tighten up the bolts just fine. They are 5mm larger than stock, cost me $80 and 1100 miles later my slides are fine. I had a little wear in the first 150 miles or so with stock wheels but it stopped the second I installed the larger wheels. My slides have seen extreme hardpack, plowed roads etc and are fine. I understand this could cause more stress on the rails but 5000 miles on my apex and 1100 on my xtx and both have taken some very very hard hits and show no damage. Its the easiest way out and simply works.
