Last weekend I replaced a few bent and broken studs on my Vector. While I was at it, I replaced the regular nyloc nuts with Woody's Big Nuts to try to help. These are regular threaded nuts that have star washers that go underneath. Did I make a big mistake by not using LocTite on them? What have you guys done when using these?

i've got 144 big nutz and they seem to be OK without loctite. I need to check the starwasher thing cuz my dealer put the studs on and I don't remember starwashers being mentioned!!!
I'm running the Signature Series. 565 miles so not a real good test yet

I used green loctite on mine as sugested in woodys directions and when I talked with them at big east show.
You could use the green loctite and that will work its way into the threads even though it is already assembled.

There were no directions in my packages or on the outside. I emailed Woodys technical assistance for their views, but I wish I would have just used it anyway. That was quite a chore changing all of the nuts with hand tools. If I loosen them to use loctite, I am going to use an air ratchet this time!
Do you really think loctite would weep into the threads without loosening?

The green stuff will not sure of the number but that iswhat its made for assembled fasteners its much thinner than the standard blue stuff.
I read that from the woodys catalog or off their website on installation instructions last spring.

Interesting.
I still can't find anything on Woody's site where they say to use LocTite. They haven't answered my inquiry yet, but I'll let you know what they say when the do.

I just had my RX1 studded at the dealer this year and they put LocTite on every one of the tall nuts. I think mine are stud boy though. They said they found that they had to because they would loosen up.

The instructions that come with the BIG nuts specifically state to use blue threadlocker and a star washer on each nut.
I followed these instructions and put 1,500 miles on my 144 studs without one nut coming loose.
So, use the threadlocker... it's cheap and easy compared to a hole in a heat exchanger...

Wish mine would have come with instructions. There were none inside the bags and nothing printed on the outside of the bag that pertained to using LocTite.
Guess I should have thought about it BEFORE I had them all installed instead of AFTER. Seems like common sense after the fact. I know if I don't loosen all of them now and apply LocTite, I will be worried about it every time I ride. Think I'll use air tools this time around.
Woody's has yet to respond to my inquiry.

That SUX, but the rework time will be worth it in the long run... I wonder why you didn't get the little instruction sheet that I did???

my dealer said there were no instructions in mine either. Dang..forgot to ask if they loc t'd them in!
Spoke to Woody's tech department.
THEY SAID DO NOT USE LOCTITE
TORGUE TO 15 FOOT POUNDS OR 180 INCH POUNDS
RECHECK AFTER A FEW RIDES AND PERIODICALLY AFTER THAT

They must have changed their tune after last year... I bought the BIG Nuts right after they came out early last season... in fact, my dealer had trouble getting them. Their new recommendation probably explains why folks aren't getting the instruction sheet that I did...
Regardless of what Woody's new recommendation is, Blue or Green Loctite never hurts and is easy to remove with hand tools.

At the risk of kicking a dead horse as far as this thread's concerned, I just thought I'd pass along the email reply that I finally got back from Woody's.
"You did the correct thing by not using loctite. We actually recommend against it. We recommend using a torque wrench and installing our studs to the recommend 15 ft/lbs of torque. Then we recommend periodically checking or re-torqing your studs to the 15 ft/lbs. This is due to the possibility that the rubber will actually lose it's memory in between the stud and the support plates and possibly loosen the connection between the two. If you have loctite installed it takes more than the 15 ft/lbs rating to break it loose. Therefore whether it was loose or not at 15 ft/lbs it wouldn't move. Also if you did get the loctite to break loose when re-torqing then it wouldn't do you any good from that point on. I hope this information helps. If you have any further questions or concerns please reply to this e-mail or contact me on our Tech Line @ (989)689-4911."
