Had the misfortune to have my muffler blow open and destroy my side panel on the third morning of a four day saddlebag trip. I tried to get the latest flash done before my trip but no mechanic was available to do the update so I left on my trip with the previous 2 start flash. The second morning in Lasarre Quebec my machine started at 30 below Celsius on the second attempt and all was well. The third morning at an outfitter in Lac Faillon Quebec my machine tried to fire on the first two attempts while cranking a little slower, I keyed off the ignition and tried a third time and side panel pieces landed 4 machines away. I had to wait 5 1/2 hours for my ride to pick me up. Now I'm waiting on Yamaha Canada to see if they will warranty my machine which only had the 2 year warranty that ran out last October. The muffler is $1070 and the side panel is $257 here in the great white north. What I'm asking is if anyone can help me out with proof that Yamaha did warranty mufflers on machines that had expired and did get covered.

I have an MPI Turbo so I did not use the stock muffler at all. I would sell it for a LOT less than that if you are in a bind. That is an insane price for a muffler. I would buy an aftermarket one before I ever paid that.

Thanks for the offer and I will keep that in mind, I really need a stock muffler as I only ride trails and they inspect the machines for stock mufflers around here.

It is the stock muffler. It was never used as it was taken off when they put the Turbo on. The MPI kit came with its own muffler. Just trying to help out a fellow sledder. Hopefully Yamaha will take care of you or at least give you a break on the price.

Sorry for the confusion on my part as I did understand that you were offering a stock muffler, I was just stressing that I did need a stock muffler for the trail patrol and we do pass near a lot of residential areas on our saddlebag trips and I would never run anything else due to the trail closures that are occurring for noise and from off trail riding on private land. Service rep is looking into my case as he asked the dealer to send in the bill of sale so he can look at it and make a decision. I'll be going to dealer on Thursday morning to get the latest flash with a borrowed muffler from my brother in law who has parked his 2-2014 vipers for this year due a lack of interest and one machine has a broken chain case from hitting a rock.

Good luck with your repair work and hopefully all goes well with dealer .I also have a stock muffler available with approx 4000 kms on it. $1070 for a new OEM muffler is highway robbery.

I have a stock exhaust off of a 2015 that I put a mpi turbo on that I would be willing to part with. It has about 200 miles on it.

You don't need proof. They know already that they blew all the time. Seeing that exhaust is part of emissions I bet it's covered after warranty ends.

Emissions is the secret extended warranty on a lot of stuff if you want to push the issue.

Was told that my warranty claim was denied because Yamaha never saw my sled other than the warranty check up, so sorry for doing my own oil changes and other work. I then asked them for my claim number so that I could contact Yamaha myself to see if anything could be done and when they finally found the work order and e-mail from the service rep Yamaha was willing to pay half. I called bullshit on that and asked to have the newest flash done anyways since I was there with the machine. Which is when it was discovered that the claim was sent in on my wife's 2015 which has never been flashed and starts 1st shot every time no matter the conditions. I was then told that my warranty expired November 30/2018 on the 2016 because of the spring order had a 2 year extended warranty which is on top of the original 1 year which makes 3 years and I only thought that I had 2 years total. So now there is proof of fuel gauge replacement under warranty and the previous flash was also done when it was available. New claim is now submitted with proper documentation and should have an answer soon. Owner at dealer had a used muffler off of his personnel Viper which was turboed but was unwilling to sell it in case he returned the sled to stock form for selling at a later date. I thought that was a little inconsiderate on his part but he wanted me to order parts in case the claim was denied. If my claim is denied I will be buying my parts elsewhere you can bet on that.
For a little bit of rumour see my post under The future of Yamaha in 2020 and beyond.

Blew a muffler, broke a tab on the side panel ect while on a bag trip in Quebec,
Had no choice but to ride it to a Cat dealer. Had to pay FULL BOAT, took pictures, even a video in the service bay and was in contact with dealer at home.
Needless to say Yamaha initially said SORRY FOR YOUR LUCK... denied!!!!

Hid behind the fact that they didn’t have the old parts WTF I was in Canada touring!!!!!
Took almost 2 months of back and forth to get them to do the right thing.
They finally paid but unfortunately they try to wear you out so you just go away.
Hope it all works out.

Just had one locally go so bad the sidepanel and worse the oil lines melted losing all the oil in motor. This is Emissions and more important a huge safety issue. They damn well better pay. Should be a safety recall already! Pisses me off.
