New to this sport. This sled has 1900 miles and pretty much sat for 2 years. It won't idle without 1/2 choke, Needs full maintenance but the bones are all there. Needs a seatcover? Oil change, etc. Can I squirt something in the carbs to unplug or do they need a rebuild? I think it will be an awesome sled when I bring it back to par.
Any help and tips will be appreciated

This is the Viper forum area. Probably get better help in the RX1 section. I would say pull carbs and clean them. Will get much better results than dumping a fuel system cleaner in it.

They have a very small hole. Sometimes the smallest torch cleaning tip will fit, another option is one of the wires on a steel brush along with compressed air.Ok. Figured that. Thanks

No more than they cost buy 4 new ones , clean the old ones so you have spares for the next time. Bowl o ring gaskets may be shrunk and sometimes it's easier to get new ones too. You can get them aftermarket in a 4 pack. Sync the carbs when done. If it has had fuel in it for 2 years put some new filters in the tank too or you may be fighting it again. At least that's where I would start.

Forgot to ask. Can these pilot jets be accessed without pulling the carbs of the motor

you can use a coat hanger to hook and lift the fuel filters out through the filler neck pne at a time. i hold the hose with pliers as it is tight to do.
sry you do need to pull the carbs off of the motor to clean or replace the pilot jets.

yes filters are in the tank and they are a PITA. I ended up making my pickup hoses longer to make it easier . If you do put longer fuel line in make sure it's submersible fuel line (it's not cheap) or you will have problems down the road .

Bought an 03 last year with 1,200 kilometers on it.
I took out the carbs in the rack (four carbs bolted together). I did not separate them or syncronise them. I took them all apart and cleaned floats, needle valves and all jets then re-installed.
All gaskets and jets on my machine were fine. I just cleaned and re-installed.
It runs like a top. Pulls hard and runs smooth.
A bit rich based on soot on back end but the jets are correct for my altitude and it runs good so I didn't mess with it.
I changed the engine oil and filter twice last year and ran seafoam to loosen stuck rings. It was burning a little oil and I think that fixed it but I've only put about 400 km on it this year so I might be wrong.
The total is about 3,500 km on it now.
I tightened the track last year on the trail after the drivers started slipping under full throttle. No idea what spec should be but a little but tighter stopped the slipping.
Changed my in tank filters through the filler neck. SERIOUS PITA! old ones looked like new but at least I have peace of mind!
The RX-1 is not a great starter machine. VERY heavy and quite fast. Mine will do 145 km / hour with the long track and factory 2" paddles on the flats. I love the power and the four stroke sound, but you may find it too heavy for a first machine. Good luck on that. People have called mine the RX-1 ton.
I had a seat patched on my skandic a few years ago by an upholstery shop but it ripped again this year due to age.
I ordered a new seat cover from ebay for my skandic and hope to install it in the next few weeks. Stainless staples, a can of silicone spray and a heat gun will get it on straight and tight. They are a bit of work but not too hard to install.
I suggest you buy and carry a Yamaha replacement belt. I ride fairly hard and have burned two and exploded one. I run dayco on my skandics but they do not stand up to the power of the RX-1. I recommend the Yamaha part they seem to last much better for me.
Good luck with it! Tons of fun and cheap for what you get!

Thanks for the detailed reply. I'm going to have my dealer install the reverse kit since it's so heavy. I have a worn out shoulder! Love the 4 stroke, non smoking power. The carbs are clogged on the idle jets, so they need to come off. It only has 1900 miles, so should last awhile. I do have to Yamaha belts that it came with. Got the oil changed and the zirks greased. I'll let my dealer fix with the carb problem. I'll have the seat recovered next year and put the Dooley carbides on. May raise the bars as well.
Thanks again
