Building a $6500 4-stroke mountain animal

shocks

Shaver Lake Power Center on snowest is selling fox floats for $580 shipped (I think... pretty close to that). I ended up talking myself into the barkbuster front end plus fox floats ($1400... OUCH), but, 17 pounds off as well.

Expensive d@mn addiction, this sledding... :drink: :)

Rx1M5 - boost shopping - LOL - expensive that is, but the boosted fun factor outweighs the expenses by far.

Of all the money I have put out on sleds, including buying new sleds, the turbo is by far the funnest and crazest thing I have done! Nothing else even comes close secound.
I fought the rx the first year, could have run it off the cliff a number of times :o| . Secound year had it lighter and running better but was still work. I think I still have nightmares of the first year. With all the posts on this sight and great input and posting by Kachess this sled becomes a great project sled if you enjoy a wrench, and probably the best dependable long term mountain sled you can buy! If money is a problem, do as Kacess, pick up a good used do all the mods and still less then new. :4STroke:
But then go turbo or s/c  it is a total rush and no mod or sled comes close in my book! I know the flat landers go some big boost and horse power but put me in the hills with 10-12# boost and its a whole new world :jump:
I'am looking froward to Kachess post after he gets a couple good rides on his bender-T. I cannot imagine ever riding anything but a turbo again :yam: :flag:

rx-hi - well said

There is no way going back to stock. If I ever buy another sled it will have a turbo and 300 HP at least :)

BTW - I'm in the process of loosing a little weight before this coming season.
Kachess - thanks for all mod ideas.

RX-1 T/C or S/C

You guys running the boosted RX-1 or APEX's would kind of time/life are you getting out of the other drive train componenets? (i.e., belt chain, gears, drivers) I keep thinking of boosting mine, but them part of my reasoning for buying a 4-stroke was for less maintenance costs. The last sled I owned was a Thundercat, what a money pit that thing was....

Mt Mountain Man: I have 3000 miles of boost with no issue at all, some have over 10000 from what I read. I buy a new belt ea. season but with good clutching, secoundary is usally wound tight to grab belt with the turbo most are between 80-100. If you take care of the belt and clean clutches 2000 miles on a belt. Thats the best thing with Yami 4 strokes maintenance is minumal to other sleds.
Sorry about your pain with the Thundercat, I saw a few awsome runs with them but at high expens!

Power Nomad, I do remember you guys (re-looked at the picture titled Nomad Likey). It was actually my second year ('03/04) with the RX-1. We rented a REV and RMK 800 for Tura (now she has the '05 IQ 900).

I sent you a pm about our plans for early this season. I'll try to make it up there for at least a day trip when you guys are there so you can try the out boost Super Charged style. My sled won't be as light as yours (was -50 until the SC install) but it makes up for it with the boost.

Belt life on the turbo the same as stock in my sled, it's all in the clutching.

I will expect chain life to be half the miles of a stocker, but I have no idea how long it will last. I changed out the chain when going turbo for my piece of mind, when checking the chain tension it has not streched much if any the last two seasons, will check it before I change the drive sprockets.

UPDATE: Checked chain tension, was able to tighten the chain 1/8 turn to fingertight.

I did not change out the gears as there were no visible wear to them, I'll check them as well.

UPDATE: No visual wear on the gears still like new. No metal residue in the bottom of the chaincase. I run motoroil in my chain case same as inside the motor, engine oil can take the heat from high speed running better than most chain case oils without degrading.

The WhalBros extroverts are junk, lasted two seasons and about 2000 miles, they started to melt last season when doing speedruns on the lake.

Speedo side drive axel bearing lasted one season, broke on my first ride last season. I will now change it before the season.

I will change out drive train bearings on a regular basis; like speedo side driveaxel bearing once a year, and all the other drive train bearings every three years.

Same with me on my '03 SCRX-1mtn with the 162" track. Only difference is; my entire drive train is the same that came when I purchased the sled new (with the exception of clutching changes for boost). I still have about 1/2 the bolt left for adjustment on my chain (3100 miles).

I might throw the (still new) spare belt on sometime this season to see if there's a difference in performance even though the original still looks good.

The bearings are a maintenance issue for the sled not a Turbo or s/c issue. If sled is stock guys still need to check their bearings and grease or replace. All normal maintenace needs to be done to all sleds, Grease, check suspention bolts and springs, fluids, track and chain tension, etc.

The one thing that I don't like about my '03 is that the stock exhaust cooked the toe out on my good winter boot! After the first $300 pair of boots gets BBQ'd the money to go with a under seat exhaust seems well worth it.
