Burning Rubber

My sledmates keep telling me they smell burning rubber when they ride behind me. I've got a 2007 Attak GT with a FIX Powersports clutch kit. It seems to only happen on fairly high speed runs for some distance not when riding trails. I believe it's the belt and am concerned they may be wearing out prematurely. Also, noticed the gas mileage is lower with the clutch kit when comparing it to our other Apex's.
Any ideas?

Sounds like they were smelling hyfax. On very hardpacked roads try to get it in some fresh snow often. You may be running higher rpms with the kit which will drink more fuel.

Iw as told the same thing a week ago on the trail by my bud. When I stopped. Checked the belt it was hot but looked ok. When I tried to move it slipped real bad and had to wait a few minutes for the heat to cool down. My belt is worn really bad, new one today. about 2000 miles, and hard riding. LOL

My buddies are telling me the same thing lately. We even put my sled in back for a while to make sure it was the one causing the smell. They think they smell it most when I'm playing hard - but not necessarily fast. Good snow conditions. I've been over track and belt both, don't see any unusual wear anywhere..... just waiting to find it the hard way I guess.

I had this on my 06 GT, the trails were hardpacked and tight. I installed the little wheel kits and it seemed to eliminate this. Also note that the closed windows on the stock track will rub on the hyfax too with lack of snow and that will stink. Maybe the track is too loose allowing this.

Here is my thread when I had this issue.

;)!

rubber and plastic dont mix...especially with higher lug tracks and not on snow trails...if your running ice or flat roads as stock...your buring your slides...and if you stop and try to start...you might find it difficult as the clips are melting to the slides...
best thing to do after thos type of runs is hit some powder before stopping and run for a few minutes cooling the slides down before stopping completely

I would suggested to put SLP Pads in the closed windows and loosen your track tension. A min. of 1" of free sag between track and slide.

cooking the hyfax, nice smell, when i put a new pair on i run it as fast as i can and then put it right in the snow to cool them quickly, then they last longer

Yes, my dealer said the same thing!!!

It's smell good!!!

Its more than likely your wheels getting hot on the track. I noticed at higher speeds these wheels build up heat when snow is marginal. Combined with hyfax and theres all kinds of burning.

If you smell rubber and the belt is hot. Its the belt your buddies are smelling.
If you have one of the new Yami belts pulling the 3 shims out from behind the secondary should help. The ones that adjust the belt deflection.
If I remember right it is 2mm wider than the old 8DN belt.

If I can find the thread about it I will post the link

I had the same problem,it was my hyfax melting,i put 6 polaris 5.350 wheels in my suspension instead of the yamaha 5.150 wheels, and it did the trick, got even a better fuel millage and top speed whit them, the stock wheels don't even touch and whit the poo ones, they barely touch so it's going to be just fine.
