So I struck a rock yesterday, got to love spring riding conditions. Dead centre , bent the plate on my subframe, ripped the skid plate that covers the oil filter area off and worst of all there is a grove in the lower engine case that is slowly leaking oil. So my question is can the engine case be repaired? or Does anyone know where I could get a used one, I can't even imagine how much a new one is going to cost.

Lift the front of the sled and support it with a secure structure. Then rub the damaged area vigorously with a large stack of your local paper currency. It may take 2 or three applications.

new one cost 131.53 and gasket 10.85 not to bad don't think u will find a used one but u could try AL'S Snowmoble parts 802-487-1000

Looks like the oil pan, if that is what is exposed when you remove the skid plate, $170 canadian which I will be replacing not repairing. The engine case, which you have to buy as a pair is $2500. Won't know for sure until the engine is out.

I had a similar case earlier this year when I hit something and it cracked my sump cover. I just took it off and welded it. Just cost me a new gasket, and time but who counts that! lol

Thnaks for the replies, looks like it is just the bottom plate, not the case itself. Hurricane if it is the case, I will be in contact with you.

We can fix the lower case .it,s not expensive to repair but you can,t replace it without the upper case.they are a matched set

The crankcase halves need to be matched because it carries the crankshaft assembly but the lower cover is not matched to the crankcase. Yamaha sells it separate and it requires a gasket to seal to the case which means it can be used on any Nytro block.

Cast aluminum can be difficult to weld due to oxidation and contaminates. These engines run in extreme conditions and with all the vibrations and heat cycling there is a good chance the repair could fail. If you find someone to repair your cover they might guarantee their work but I bet if it fails and destroys your engine they won't reimburse you. For a few extra dollars you can buy a new one. They sell for under a $100 and you'll know it's right.

$87 at Yamaha Parts Depot, part#8ES-13417-00-00: http://www.yamahapartsdepot.com/fiche_s ... fveh=28688

The engine does not need to come out to change the cover. Remove the subframe and you'll be able to drop the cover with no problem. The frame will come out with a-arms and skis still attached and requires no special tool.

You're lucky you didn't take out the heat exchanger as well. Sounds like it's time for a skid plate. BTW it's the same part for the Vector engine, so you could look for a used Vector strainer cover. I have a brand new one if you're interested.

GT, did it work?

Grizz, can I do this on an 05 Vector. my oil case is cracked as well. part is reasonable, but don't want to pull the engine....
