Thanks for all the replies! Much appreciated. Here is the actual auction listing with some more pictures, they are pretty bad pictures and the rear exhaust is covered up by saddle bags. The auction is tomorrow so I'll go check it out, if it's nice and a decent deal I may take a chance on bidding. There seem to be a fair number for sale on Autotrader so at least I know what the average asking price is.

Snowmobiles never really interested me before and with poor snow seasons we've been having lately I wasn't enticed to spend 15k on a new sled any time soon. Something used around 4k would be ok though. A couple of friends have bought sleds so at least I'd have people to ride with if I get one. I was looking at the trail maps and there area tons of trails pretty much from my house in the west end of the city, I can even get to my cottage 170km away.
And yes, I know any used older machine will need some work. I just don't want a total project machine up front that I'm going to spend a month fixing, if that means spending a bit more for something with lower miles that's fine. I bought an old Polaris Sportsman last year and have rebuilt it pretty much top to bottom. I'm 6'6" so being bent over working on that thing was a killer for my back. I'm older, grumpier, fatter and less nimble that I was years ago when I built up Jeeps for off roading, swapping drivetrains, axles etc.

They also have a Phaser at the Auction, It looks a bit small though. As mentioned above, I'm 6'6" and build like a NFL linebacker so I need something with a bit of room on it. Regardless, I don't necessarily have to buy either, I just wanted to figure out what it was and what to look for in case it turned out to be a crazy good deal.

Def and Apex LTX 136" track, with mono-shock suspension, see last pic in auction link. I had one and really liked it, almost 20,000kms and no major issues. Really need to know the mileage to make a judgment about what needs attention if sled hasn't been maintained 100%.
Loads of information on TY, if you can't find what you need, ask away, you've come to the right place.

Phazer won't cut it YJGUY. Apex is your machine just a matter of finding a decent one.
At auction, could be hit or miss on a deal, but I wouldn't flirt with anything over $5k (Canadian prices) without knowing more about the sled. A good deal would be $4k, a great deal less than that.
Cheers.

Thanks Apexallday. Yes, I'll have to take a good look at it tomorrow. Again, thanks at least I know what it is now so I have some baselines for pricing and milage for similar sleds. There is also a 13% buyers premium at this auction plus normal 13% tax so it would have to be a pretty good price to make it worthwhile. I'll post up tomorrow night to let people know what happened in case they are curious.
Cheers.
Cheers.

- 2008 Vector shorty, 17 Shitdoo 1200X, 2000- pullmyass-340 for Grandkids
If you can get it for around 4k it should be a good deal. It looks to have a small riser on the handle bars already. The only thing you might not like is the soft seat. My brother is 6ft-3 and he doesn't like my Vector because the seat sits so low. There are ways to change everything! For your trails up there you should love this machine . When you squeeze that throttle a big smile will appear.

Last pics says a lot. Apex Ltx. It has the optional marginal snow wheels mounted mid rail which is nice. 6'6" and built like a linebacker I would get the rear shock rebuilt and valved for your weight and the optional 8.0 Big Boy spring installed. Trunk bag and saddle bags are nice for longer trips. The Rox handguards with mirrors are very handy in the trails. They don't help keep the hands warm tho. Yamaheaters do a good job of that. Still has the stock wheels in the skid which are non serviceable. Yamaha has spoked wheels that you can change the bearings in stead of the entire wheel assembly. The Billet gas cap is a nice touch. The sled was used to haul a trailer of some sort judging by the trailer wiring harness laying on the rear extension

Diameter of the arms.
Diameter and material. Vector and all 11+ apex have smaller diameter and are steel with no cross member behind shock.

- Bought a new 05 Vector which I still have
24K miles
Looks like a trailer plug on back? If so it must have pulled a snow coach. Any evidence of a hitch being on it at some point.
If you can get the VIN number before the auction, have a Yamaha dealer run it to see what's been done to it. At least what's been documented. Sled looks clean enough.

I just bought its sister 2008 Apex LTX with 4500 on the odometer. I replaced all six idlers and the bearings on the large wheels due to rough bearings, had the shocks revalved/serviced, new dupont slides, new carbides, cleaned and greased the jackshaft and speedo bearings, changed the fluids and filter. I'm ready for many seasons of trouble free vrooom!

looks like a good sled. if the seat is too soft, you could always put on a wrp seat later to firm it up and raise you up a bit more. brother (6'4") uses one on his rx war mod and loves it.
damage on right ski could have come from a clamshell trailer bracket. seen a few skis shaved like that.

Just got back from the sale. It wasn't a normal auction, it was a tag sale. Everything was already stickered with a price like at a garage sale. They held everyone at the end of the driveway until noon and then people sprinted to go pick stuff out. There were about 50 people waiting for it to start. The sale is on today and tomorrow so maybe they will drop pricing tomorrow to clear things out. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow to see whats left. I think the nicest thing there was the house. Big bungalow across from the river with an over sized, heated, 6 car garage. Garage of my dreams!
Both of the sleds they had (Phazer and Apex) were in really good shape. No evidence of accidents or any abuse. They were owned by an older couple, I assume he passed away and that is the reason all of the toys and hunting equipment are for sale. They wanted $5500 for the Apex and $4000 for the Phazer. I have no idea the mileage as the auction people couldn't find the keys while I was there. In any case $5500 plus 26% combined tax and buyers fee was out of my range.
They also had a Grizzly ATV for sale that I was also ready to buy but again it was over priced to begin with for the condition, plus the fees. I understand the family wants to get the most benefit from the sale but asking normal kijiji/craigslist prices and then having to pay fees on top of that is not going to happen on the big tickets items.
Anyway, thanks for all the info provided in this thread, I'll keep looking!
