Catastrophic failure - so mad!

Maybe BOP or someone has an older 2014 engine from a wrecked sled...for a swap out, then rebuild this one and have a spare?

I did scour this site for info and found two answers. Ulmer no. Hurricane yes.

I saw Hurricane appeared to be a trusted, experienced vendor so I posed the question to him directly before purchasing. I expected that based on his experience as a builder and his ability to see engine internals, that I don't have access to, he would supply me with an answer that would be correct and err on the conservative side if there was any question at all.

Also he didn't sellme the kit. I bought it used from a very good member here after I received confirmation I was good.

I’m sure he thought you were going to buy from him during your conversation?
Did you specify you were looking to buy a used kit?
Either way posting a negative review of a TY vendors kit will get you nothing but problems on the site. Only “Happy” reviews are welcome here, any negative reviews will get you on the $hit list. More than likely your posts will get deleted. Been there, Done that.

Okay, my perspective on this. I am one of the people who has a 2016 Viper with an MPI turbo from the factory spring order. I had the updated rods put in as per the recall. My motor blew up 4000km later. Yamaha originally said they were not going to cover it saying it was oil starved. When the tech rep came to see the motor, you could put your finger in one of the 14 holes in my block and spin the bearing on the crank so clearly that was not the issue. Remember that Yamaha had paid to put in the supposed better rods already.

They did finally replace the whole motor with a brand new 2018 motor that they verified would be able to handle the MPI kit. That was very important to me as I would have paid to have Carrillo rods and a head shim put in if they were not willing to stand behind the new motor as I did not want to replace it a year later. I now have over 7000KM on the new motor and have had no issues. Can the new ones handle boost? No idea but so far mine has. They say that the new rod that failed earlier was an outlier and not common.

Not sure that Hurricane should share the blame. He probably has dozens out there that are doing fine which is why he said what he said. I see no upside in him lying to you. Sometime things go boom. ;(

Thanks for the note. Yes I corresponded by email and in it I clearly stated I was looking into a used kit and that I was concerned about the 2016 rod issue.

Well that adds a twist doesn't it. :) People are telling me Yamaha and MPI have clearly stated somewhere that only 14 and 15's to be boosted and here is Yamaha themselves supplying you with an '18 and putting your MPI turbo on it --- unless they stripped down the '18 first and put different rods in it which I would think is unlikely.

Well they really did not have a choice. They originally stated that they would replace the motor but would not allow the turbo back on it. I said "okay, sell me a Winder at dealer cost". Then they said it was the Turbo's fault. It was not. Eventually they caved (9 months of polite back and forth) and installed the new motor and the turbo went back on it. I assume it was an 18 motor as it was the new style and it was in 2018 and there was a shortage of older short blocks available, as in they used them all up fixing peoples motors that blew up.

That's not true at all, and I've been one of your advocates. It comes down to sticking to facts and not heated opinions......which can become hard to do when the sh@t hits the fan and sprays in your face.....trust me I know.
Been there done that

Trust me everything I posted about my kit was 100% true and actually happened, I have no reason to lie. Many other issues have surfaced since then but I haven’t said a thing for this very reason. Anyone who has a Hurricane turbo kit is free to PM me on the long list of issues I’ve had and how I’ve fixed them but I’m no longer willing to publicly post them.
Yes I reacted poorly when attacked but one thing is for certain, there is no shortage of issues with the Hurricane 270-400 kit.

Yeah I guess "facts vs opinions" wasn't the best choice of words. I don't doubt the issues you had. In the end it comes down to how you conduct yourself not whether you state your problems with a site vendor

Bull. We discussed this exact topic of whether a newer than 16 Viper could be Turbo with stock rods and its just like OP stated. Hurricane said yes and Ulmer said no. Why Hurricane who found the issue first in 16 motors actually believed newer ones could be Turbo I have no idea but he was wrong. My advise to everyone who asked was NO Turbo on 16.5 and later motors.
