Change from 24 to 23th top gear. Want to use synthetic gear lube to refill.
Ordered some from a catalog, but it turned out to be primarily for use on an open chain design. Not sure I want to use this as a fill. I did put a sample in the freezer @-10F. Didn't congeal, but rather tacky. Tried the same on the OEM fill that came with the ER and it was capable of movement when tipped. Don't know if the factory fill is synthetic or not. Looking for suggestions.

My vote: Buy some full synthetic 75W-90 or 80W-90 gear lube at your local auto parts store (Mobil 1, Valvoline, others). It's full synthetic, flows well in the cold, you get a full quart cheaper than any of the tiny bottles of "snowmobile chaincase lube", have built-in no-spill easy-pour nozzle, and meets the Yamaha lube weight and GL ratings which are printed in your owner's manual.

Chaincase lunricant=Mobil 1 full/synthetic
I use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. Can get it practically anywhere, works fine in this application.

REMEMBER TO PUT IN 250 ML OF GEAR OIL AN USE THE HIGHEST MARK ON THE DIPSTICK THIS IS 250 ML NOT THE REVERSE MARK AS IT IS WRONG

Was going to go Mobile 1 myself, but the local stores don't have a very good selection, the one place that had synthetic Mobile only had 75w-140. Only 75(70?)w-90 I could find wasn't synthetic. So I ended up going with Amsoil chaincase oil. Ended up filling it to the STD mark, thats where it was when I purchased the sled, I can't really see what a little extra oil is going to hurt, as long as the dipstick is vented properly, it shouldn't build any pressure.

First I have heard of this "reverse" oil level mark on the chaincase dipstick being incorrect.
Where did you hear about it?

I used Amsoil synthetic to the reverse mark last year. 4,000 miles with no problems. knock on wood

Can anybody else confirm this error on the reverse portion of the dipstick?
I changed mine last night (Attak with reverse) and added 8 oz of fluid. With that amount it is perfectly aligned with the highest mark on the dipstick for a non-reverse model. If what is being said is true, then this is why I seem to be overfilled by 4 oz.

My dealer told me the ER holds 250 cc's, which equals 8.5 oz.

Yamaha says reverse and non-reverse sleds both take 8.5 ounces. Everyone has this info stamped on a decal on their sleds (belt guard if memory serves) and printed in their owner's manual.
Based on the consistent 8.5 oz spec, the marks on the dipsticks are very misleading and seemingly incorrect.

THE LOWER MARK IS ABOUT 125 ML OR 4.5 OZ.
WHEN YOU RUN YOUR SLED AT HIGH SPEED FOR LONG PERIOD THE OIL GETS VERY HOT. THE OIL IF LOW WILL NOT DISSIPATE THE HEAT ENOUGH. THE CHAINCASE NEEDS THAT MUCH OIL 250ML OR 8.5 OZ TO DISSIPATE THE HEAT AND KEEP THE TEMPERATURE DOWN.
