Why does a sled with reverse take less chaincase oil then a sled without reverse? Also ,I put 85-140W gear oil in my 08 Vector. Manual recommends 75W GL3 .This stuff is GL4. I assume theres little difference.

I've always wondered the same thing. I just fill it to the line in between the two and I have never had a problem.

On the belt guard it says 8.5 oz. Doesn't matter if it is an ER or if it doesn't have reverse.

I was told by a sled mechanic ,its because of the extra gear in the chaincase taking up more room. Kind of like adding ice cubes to a glass. It takes less liquid to fill it.

exactly so it is 8.5 oz either way but with the extra gear it fills it further.

So what would happen if it was overfilled ? specifically on a viper, mine is almost up to the top of the sight glass. Around 1/16" of an inch from the top of the sight glass.

if it builds pressure it can blow a seal but there is allot of room for expansion so would need to be way over filled.

I called Port Yamaha today, they said the Yamaha chaincase oil bottles are 8oz. and to use that amount in all models, standard and reverse (Viper is different). 8.5 oz. is close enough. If you fill it to the "rev" line on the stick that is only like 3oz. which is really a small amount.

Ive been running 16oz in my viper without issue. 85 90 syn gear lube

3 oz.???!!! A typo Mike?

8 oz. get's me to the REV line on both of my Vector's. 14 Vector Owners Manual says .26 Imperial qt.
