Checking over my sled yesterday and doing some routine maintenance.

I notice that my Chaincase oil is filled to the correct level for a non-reverse machine. My machine has reverse and the specified fill level is lower.

I plan to suck some out to obtain the correct fill level.

Anyone else notice this?

Anyone know if this has the potential to damage anything?

Mine falls where between the two.. Hmmmmmmmmmmm..After the break-in period I'll change it over to syn. lube.. Maybe I can get the correct level myself. MM. ;)!

I have the same sled as you, as well as the same situation...an ER sled filled to the non-ER level.

I asked this question earlier and the general consensus was that it shouldn't be a problem. The thought was that any extra wouls simply come out the vent hole. I only have 100 miles on mine, but have left it as is.

I just checked my 05 RX-1 ER and it too is filled to the STD full mark.

I'm taking it in to the dealer for a checkup (mainly to fix the idling on 3 cylinders) Wednesday and I'll ask them about it.

I have 1500 kms on it now.

If you don't mind, I'd be interested in what your dealer has to say about it.

Thanks.

I had the same problem after taking my SX700R with reverse to the dealer to have a new track installed. Go it back home and checked the oil level and found it at the std level. I think the techs are in a hurry and they put the same amount in all sleds, std or reverse. There has to be a reason the dipstick differentiates between the two so I used a chicken baster, attached a piece of fuel line to it and sucked the excess out. Yamaha clearly wants less oil in the chain case if you have reverse.

It really can't make a difference. I don't understand why there are two different marks. Its not pressurized. I 've had my chaincase apart twice, the quarter inch of fluid would not make any difference.

I was thinking the diameter of the gears for a reverse sled are different than a non-reverse sled so the gears displace more or less oil. That way you can have an 8.5 oz fill for both types of sleds and only have one dipstick. However, when you put in the recommended amount of oil it seems to overfill on a reverse sled.

That said, I can't see what difference that would make. I'm adding the recommend amount to my viper and not worrying about it.

I forgot to post this, but when I picked it up from my dealer (first service) and asked about the level they said it was fine at the std full mark (they didn't remove any).

I recently changed my chaincase oil and put in 250 ml (per the Yamaha spec.). It ended up well above the reverse full mark - sitting at the add on the std side of the stick.

I called the dealer again and spoke to a mechanic. He said - put in 250 ml and don't worry about it.

There is a drain plug on inside of the tunnel on the bottom of the chaincase alot easier they sucking it out

Kinda hard to control how much comes out when you open a drain plug, then try to jam it back in, all the while oil is spilling everywhere. No, I'll stick to removing a little at a time from the top to get to the proper level.

But the question is - What is the proper level???

- The Yamaha shop manual calls for 250 mL. My dealer also says to fill with 250 mL.

- The dip stick calls for about 170 mL if you have reverse.

- The factory fills it to the full std. level, which is about 280 mL.

(dipstick and factory fill amounts are estimates)
