Ive got 276 miles on the APEX.. and going to the U.P. in 2 days for 4 days of riding... Ive got a new filter and 4 quarts of Mobile 1 0-W30 Full synthetic for it in a box..
Do you guys think i should wait for the end of the trip to change the oil.. Or should i do it now?

You can't hurt the motor by changing oil too often. The greatest amount of wear metals are made during that first 500 miles. I'll be changing my oil after the fitst trip 300-500 miles. Change it now and again at 1000 miles and your motor will like you.

No synthetic until the sled has 1000 miles

Absolutely change the oil now! The advise to use the regular oil at this point was good too. An oil change is cheap insurance. What you do now to your engine has a lot to do with its future. I own an earthwork construction business and have seen first hand what "just waiting" a little longer to do maintainence work does, especially on a new engine.
Synthetic blend?
My dealer told me the sleds come with Yamaha 0-30 Synthetic blend when new, is that true?

my dealer told me the same thing and that's what they recommend and use in their services. I'm using a Honda 0-30 Blend though

I would wait. The trip you are going on will help the engine break in better anyways. Don't use synthetic till you break in the motor.

The early use of synthetic oil will hurt break-in is wrong acording to all major oil manufactures. They say you can use synthetic oil from new. I would have to agree being that the high end new cars come with it. Being an engine rebuilder , I don't give a different cylinder wall finish because one motor is Chevrolet or one is Ford or lexus or whatever. But I do use regular oil on my dyno break-in runs. mostly because its only run for a hour or so. Would be a waist to run synthetics so short of a time and the dyno can control temperatue in other words we don't have below "0" cold starts or 100 degree hot weather stopped in trafic either.

Re: Synthetic blend?
Thats a myth. According to Snowtech, the best snowmobile magazine out there, synthetic is fine to break a motor in with. All they said is that it may take an extra 100 miles or so and thats with pure synthetic. Semi-synthetic would take even less extra.

Does it really need an oil change this early?
My 04 R1's manual didnt say to change the oil until it had 2500kms on it and then every 5000kms after that.
As far as synthetic is concerned, it will be going in my APEX after the first change. I probably wont have to change it again for the rest of the season if I use a good synthetic. My wifes BMW Z4 doesnt need an oil change for 25000kms if using a synthetic oil.
