Changing center idler wheels

Since I have access to a machine shop where I work, I would machine all six mounts (2 inner & 4 outer) if I was installing the 6205 bearing wheels.

You only have to machine the inner rear 'cause they have track cogs on both sides and act as guides...the front ones only have cogs on the inside and with a "6205" bearing your actualy moving away from cogs and doesn't affect anything.

Since I have access to free machining, if I ran the 6205 bearing wheels I would machine the outer mounts simply so that I could use the stock mounting bolts.

Actually if you machine your outer blocks to accommodate the 6205 bearings you are moving your wheels closer to the drive lugs.

That is correct, by machining the outer mounts you are moving the outer wheels back inwards.

If you machine off half of the additional width of the 6205 bearing (1.5 mm) on the outer mounts, the 6205 outer wheels will be back to exactly where the stock 6005 outer wheels were rather than being 1.5 mm farther away from the lug if you did no machining.

I do not think that it matters if the outer wheels are 1.5 mm further away from the lugs with the 6205 bearing wheels. The only reason that I would machine them if I ran the 6205 bearing wheels is to use the stock bolts.

I run mine w/stock bolts on my "6205" its the 2nd set of idlers that the bolt is a little short the one on the left in pic, I just use a bit of LOCKETITE on it and is fine...

Is there anyone that sells the modified (.060 removed)
idler supports? Its not always easy to find someone with a lathe that can do the job.

I think that you would need a milling machine to do this rather than a lathe.

Any decent machine shop would be capable of doing this and would charge you much less than you would pay for new modified mounts if they are even available.

idlers

Kevin,
I admit you were right. There was 36mm clearance at the clips, and outside of the center idlers. The inside of the wheels do rub on the lugs. Although I have had no damage, or wear on the wheels, I am convinced it would be a good idea to machine the mounts. How much do you recommend to take off?

I would still like your opinion about narrow slides.

Thanks for the education.

Just call Kevin @ Port-Yamaha  - he's a great guy to deal with and he'll set you straight on wheels.

If you machine the blocks it will move the wheels even closer to the lugs. Look at my diagram above.

Iceman,

I believe that Yooper is talking about the inside wheels which must be centered between the lugs.

Yooper,

1.5 mm is the correct amount to machine off the inside mounts to properly center a 6205 bearing wheel between the lugs.

Sorry Yooper my bad. I used the ski-doo blocks so I didn't have to machine the center blocks because the doo blocks bring the wheels slightly closer to the rail, I did however have to shim the outer wheels to move them away from the lugs to keep them from contacting the lugs .
