Clutch Kits!!

Cool, another clutch kit thread and this one started by the boss.

While the efforts we've seen the aftermarket suppliers put into developing these kits is commendable, it's certainly refreshing to see the stock setup as being pretty decent right out of the box.

I for one remember the days where something, anything seemed to be better than what we were given as stock. I suspect the aftermarket suppliers had quite a bit to do with pushing Yamaha to provide decent stock clutching.

Thanks guys ;)!

How can the chain be looser on a reverse, when you adjust it, per manual, exactly the same?
We have already established that it is not. The slop is were the driven gear and reverse gear mesh together. They are side by side. The main 'driven' gear runs on a smooth shaft and transfers the movement through the reverse gear (they are side by side) which is attached to the driveshaft. That is why the secondary rocks back and forth.
When you run in reverse, the reverse gear is moved away from the driven gear and it is spun by a reverse idler, just above it.
Wait till you open it up sometime to see!!

This is by far the best Yamaha has ever clutched a sled...BBY

Matt; I am with you on this one. I gained a bit with just a helix change but when you hit 300+ miles the stock clutching is pretty impressive!

The clutching this year was designed to reach full RPM's within a few hundred miles. Earlier years the clutching was designed to reach full RPM's well over 1,000 miles. Yamaha finally realized that we race these sleds form the get go and were getting a bad rap by the poor results. Only drawback to doing it the way they are now is that we eventually will have to adjust clutching to bring the RPM's back down. For instance, my Attak with 300 miles is hitting 11,000 RPM's. Neither my RX-1 or Warrior would go above 9,200-9,500 forcing me to buy Heavy Hitters. Hind site being 20-20 I would have taken Turks advice and removed the rivet in the tips of the clutch weights and saved some coin :o|
