Apex/Attak Clutch Survey

I notice that some are dropping the Apex top gear to 23, I believe the RTX comes with a 22 and the Attak with a 23. There is also some going with a 40 bottom gear. What ratio are most running out there for gearing?? A guess I started a pretty HOT topic, very interesting and informative info to use with my new 08 Yammie. THANKS!!

The 07 RTX gearing is 38/22 or a 1.72 Gear Ratio, reverse models 38/23
The 06 RTX gearing is 38/24 or a 1.58 Gear Ratio
The Attaks are geared 38/23 or a 1.65 Gear Ratio

To me the ideal ratio is about 1.65 or so. You can accomplish that a couple different ways. Either run 38/23 gearing or 40/24 which would be 1.66. The 40/24 is more efficient as it reduces chain angle in the chaincase and drag.

With either combo, you can use the stock chain. The 23 gear will cost alot less than the 40...BBY

Proline IMO rocks...Any kit that utilizes the ultimate artwork of DALTON clutch parts is TOPS in my eyes..

havent been touched by any apex to date...not even close....runs toe to toe with several of the locals fastest machs....and RADARS amazing too for top end....

I wish someone had an Ulmer kit here so I could run him...this year my sled has given me some serious confidence out of the hole and ontop...

even lightly studded with 96 studs and a 1 inch sneaker she pulls with the best machs outa the hole....Im loving that cause Im a EX machz guy of 15 yrs.
I've got 144 1.375 woodys, 2/3'rds with double backers and 1/3rd singles up the middle.

We have setup many sleds here with Dalton parts(similar to PL kit) and wow, they all rock.

I'm running a similar setup and wonder what you have done to get it to come out of the hole better. My RTX with proline kit, 144 studs, windage plates, cr10ek plugs, and hygear rear shock upgrade does not come out of the hole well. I'm 200lbs, transfer set 1 notch toward min. from the middle. What else besides moving the transfer rod will help. I really don't want to add more studs.

You wont like the answer, but ADD MORE STUDS. That kit hits hard out of the hole, and if you dont hook it up, it will overshift causing your Rs to drop. Traction is vital with the Proline kit...BBY
Would you suggest studding the outside belts of the track? Did this to my viper and had to be very careful not to tear them out. I like the idea of the lower engagement. I'm pulling 11,000 rpm's out of the hole and seem's to hold it all the way through. Going to add a little tip weight to try and get it back to 10,800. Would addition wheels help traction or just help reduce hyfax wear?

How long of a stud are you running??
I've got 144 1.375 woodys, 2/3'rds with double backers and 1/3rd singles up the middle.

In have no issues hooking up with other sleds ive raced against....not sure why you guys cant get your sleds to hookup with all those studs....Proline kit with the Low engagement spring works awesome..John will ask you which spring you want(ask for low engagement,Red dalton is same)....23 gear is a must with this kit IMO.

I run 1 inch track with 96 1.175s...and I can hook up same as the machs with 168 ive been running against...maybe you guys dont have your transfer setup right?....when I add my chisels I should be further outfront easily....

As i said...noone round here uses ulmers stuff,we run lakes and most all locals do our own clutching setups.....Id like to see one run but havent had ANY apexs even remotely close to my sled.... anyone who says stockers are fast,i dont get that..as Im always at least 5mph on gun faster then closest stocker and in a drag I can get outfront, then let off, then get back on it and pass him again...so stock apexs IMO are slugs....maybe I got a freak sled?..or maybe all those little things i have done are working for me...ya think?..lol....

after 25 yrs of this stuff, its easy to know what makes these things fast...Doos were so finicky(SDIs) it was tricky...but these apex motors and clutching are simple to make run like the 170hp machs...gotta love that.

Mached..

Most of the sleds you race arnt stock..

Most other people are lucky that they dont have those fast sleds riding with them.

Had a buddy with a modded mach Killing a APex with Nitros last weekend in the U.P.. He has never been beat to date... He also wont say whats done to the sled.. (im guessing 1250 big bore kit)

I think stock Apexs are Fast compared to other STOCK sleds.. Maybe not compared to the clutched and modded sleds you ride/race with..

Ok all you guys that are running these big top speed numbers in a 1/2 miles or better, this must be glare hard ice,and not packed hard snow,if you are on packed snow running 1/2 mile what are some of your best top speed runs on snow on the gun?? Why i ask is i am looking to compare some speeds to others that have run top speed on snow covered lakes,as i dont have any clean ice to run on yet.. Thanks

I want a clutch kit for good hard packed trail conditions. I want solid punch outta the whole with 144 studs. I want to come out of the corner first and leave everyone else behind. I want to be the guy at the next intersection with helmet off drinking some water.

I couldnt care less about screaming across a lake for 2 miles. That doesnt suit my riding style. We do short bursts, and run hard.

Im really thinking heavily about the Ulmer stage 2. For my 07 RTX w/reverse.

Yes glare ice.

THose speeds you are seeing are on Glare ice or a plowed road...

Machzed, Never a problem hooking up the Proline kit on ice, but loose and even sometimes hardpack, the Proline kit would overshift more often than not. My transfer was always set right, thats one thing alot of guys overlook but I know the importance of getting the power to the track and you can certainly affect that by proper transfer adjustments. If you look at your setup, your front end is lowered, your running a 1" lug track and only 96 studs. I think you would be surprised what that 23 gear is doing for the overall performance of your sled. I can tell you from alot of test time with the Proline kit, Dont even waiste your time with it if your going to leave your gearing 38/24...BBY

I don't think woody's make a 1.375, maybe 1.325
oops, you are correct. sorry

The reason you can't hook your sled up is you've got no penetration. With a 1.325 stud on a 1.25 track your getting 0.075 penetration from your studs.

machzed is getting .175 which isn't much more .03 tenths. If your serious about hooking it up you've got to run a longer stud or a shorter track with the studs you have in your track.
