Clutch noise

Metallicat I would contact your dealer and have him contact his Service tech from yamaha RTA So that this problem gets heard about alittle more, I was phone with yamaha custermer service yesterday talking to them about this problem, waiting to hear back from them. Did u see that the 2010 vectors have a new style crank? I wonder why.

Interesting thread, wifes sled has 62 kilometeres on it and the clutch is noisy. Dealers claims the engine is so quiet that's why you hear the clutch!!!!

What a load of bunk.

oldslowsledder Thats a bunch of bull, what your being told, pull off your primary clutch and then listen to your motor you wont believe how nice it sounds, you can actually hear your exhaust instead of your clutch rattle. There is a a reason that these clutches rattle because of the excess spline play on the crank and stub shaft assys Keep pursuing the issue thats the only way we are going to get something done, Mine gets loader the more miles I put on so something is wearing out inside. :o|

Yeah, I called my dealer today and spoke with the lead technician there about my clutch rattle. He gave me the line about the sled being so quiet and that is why I hear the rattle. I told him it was obnoxiously loud and then he told me I needed to rebuild my clutch. :o| I guess I could put on straight pipes and maybe then I wouldn't hear the rattle so much.

Has anyone been able to isolate the components in the clutch that are producing the rattle? Spider slamming against the plastic inserts?

I have taken my buddys clutch off of his 05 rage which runs real quite and has 7500 miles on it, I put it on mine and it rattled just as loud as mine, I put my clutch on his sled and it was way quite The problem is not in clutch, I rebuilt my whole clutch bushings washers orings on spider sliders etc. It is not the clutch . Look straight at your clutch and grab it with both hands and rotate it back and forth you will hear a clunking sound inside engine, When your clutch is spinning it is also going back and forth from engine pulses and with added slop in splines that is where the hammering noise is coming from :drink:

I can't believe it is crankshaft noise or connecting rod noise or anything internal to the engine that we are hearing. The slop in the crank may be causing the clutch to rattle, but as loud as it is...I mean it has to be the clutch that is actually producing the noise. If it were an internal component the sound would be more muted I think. It sounds like the clutch weights are jackhammering the rollers. Ah crap, I dunno what to do about this rattletrap other than ride it the way it is. I'll call Port Yamaha tomorrow and get a second opinion. They seem to be better informed than the average dealer.

metallicat, I worded that last post wrong, it is the clutch that is making the noise, but the hammering back and forth of the splines on the crank and the stub shaft where the clutch bolts to is causing the noise to be omitted by the clutch, take off your clutch and start it up ,u will see what i mean. Let me know what port yamaha has to say, Thanks roughrider

I called Port today...guys we're just going to have to live with the noise...

Hartman sells Polaris P-85 clutches for use on Yamaha models, not sure if just 2 stroke or 4 stroke sleds. I'll call him and see if the Polaris clutch taper will fit our sleds, maybe it is jsut for 2 strokes or perhaps he machined the taper. If a P-85 is a direct bolt-on then I am going to pull the clutch off of my dad's XC and see if it is any quieter....

Holy Crap! Just called Hartman and the Polaris clutch is a direct fit! He said he has installed the Poo clutch on 4s models just to get rid of the rattle, and it works! He runs one on his Apex. Sounds like you may need a shim kit for the clutch bolt, which he is willing to help me out with. Damn, I'm going to do a little Ebay shopping this summer...should be able to pick one up for less than $200 if my experiment works! He said you use the stock clutch bolt. Don't know if the spider requires a new shim stack.

$150 "Buy It Now" brand new P-85 (1999 mfg year) on Ebay right now. Cheaper than a Yammi clutch rebuild! (Not going to buy it myself, still don't know 100% if it will work, but looking like good news for cheap summer finds!)

So if we are going to just have to live with it Yamaha dealers shouldnt have any problems with the noise when it comes time to trade in, Right. I thought that the apexs had no rattles in clutches to begin with is that right all u Apex riders??

No rattle in my '08 Apex RTX, nothing in my '03 RX-1 which run a primaty clutch off a '05 RX-1

Are there different sources for the clutch rattle? I was cleaning my sled tonight and found that my clutch rattle seems to be coming from the 3 roller bolts. There has to be 2-3 mm of slop in these bolts. What is the fix for this rattle? Is this the o-rings I have read about in other posts? Thanks, G.B.

noise

gone blue. I ground down those pins on rollers so that when bolt was tightened up there was no play, mine still rattled :o|

Thanks Rough Rider! I wasnt really sure after my post f that was the noise or not. It just seemed od that the pins are so loose. I can live with the noise, I was trying to make sure my chain tensioner wasnt making noise as well. G.B.
