Help! I just got my '04 back from the dealer pre-season once over. At idle, the clutch sounds like I threw a bucket of bolts into my wife's dryer. It goes away when I give it some throttle. It sounds TERRBIBLE, and I don't remember this from last year. I'm certain I would have noticed this before.
I don't believe they fooled with the clutch weights--but they did check the alignment. Any ideas before I bring it back to them?
Thanks

Some VECTORs are experiencing this. Check out the RS Forum, but...due to the reduction gear. I would suspect that you are talking about a different noise.

I would bet it's your gear reduction. The clue is it getting quiet when you give it some throttle.

I haven't spent much time under the hood of this one, but on my SX and Exciter, the gearing was on the opposite side of the clutches.
If it's the gear reduction, could it just be that they forgot to tighten up the chain? That's pretty sloppy.

The gear reduction is from the crankshaft to the clutch stub shaft (where the primary clutch mounts). There are two gears that run on eachother to drive the primary. Nothing you can do about it. What you're referring to on your SX and Exciter is the chaincase.

Thanks for the help, guys. I won't worry about it, I guess.

Did your dealer synchronize your carbs ? If he didn't, have him do it. Anything you can do to smooth out the idle will help reduce the noise. You might even want to crank your idle speed up 2 to 3 hundred RPM.

That's the funny thing...the dealer pulled off the carbs (which he didn't want to do, I had to ask him to), and said he synchronized them. This noise was DEFINITELY NOT there before the dealer got it.
I messed with the idle, but I have to wind it up pretty high (2500 - 3000) for the noise to go away.

You don't need to pull off the carbs to synchronize them. Maybe he adjusted the idle mixture screws and is calling that a synchronization. Synchronizing the carbs is done with a 4 column mercury manometer.
