Clutch problems need HELP

Stupid question I guess but what are we measuring when you speak of center to center. And what are we measuring offset. I am definately going to replace both springs they are only $50 in total.

Change both primary and secondary spring, they are most likely sacked. How many miles do you have on your drive belt? If it is worn below 33.5 mm it may cause the problem you've got.

Drive belt is new. I changed belts when I had the problem at the end of the year but that didn't change a thing. I have now changed both springs but now all our snow is gone so I am waiting to try it. 7000 miles on the sled. Hopefully the problem was the springs.

Go to MPI they sell a kit for offset and center distance for 40 bucks,i have it,and it works sweet. By the way center distance is the distance from the center of the crank end that your primary sets on,and the center of the jackshaft your rear secondary clutch sets on,generaly around 11.5 to 12.25 most models,if your belt circumferance is 47+ inches.

on a pol its 12 inch on a yamaha it,s 10 .57-10.63 or 268.5 - 270 mm
Yes i was just generalizing for him,so he had some idea of what center distance is,but thanks for the info john,i suspect my 03 master manual may have that spec. but than again for 50 bucks i paid for it,it can sometimes be very vague indeed.

rpm

i have had this same problem. after being told many times here and at the dealer that there is no clutch alinement ajustment as the moter is soildly mounted. i found out that that that statment was a mith i checked the c to c and there it was to close my gages would not even fit and the moter would not even hold 9000. after moveing the c to c to it,s proper distance it came back to 10500. then after i ajusted it i wouuld check it after evey ride and found that it would move a little after evey ride so i built a moter tensioner this solved the problem as it never move agein. this is some thing that should be checked on every sled rx 1, apex etc etc as there is a big perfomace loss by not doing this.

Interesting. And the adjustment is where on the motor I assume front to back ???? Is it hard to do ??? I will be trying it on Wed we are going up to the duck apparently there is snow there. Hopefully the clutch springs were the problem. I will let you know after Wed. Thanks again.

Blackjohn its funny that you mentioned this problem causing loss of rpm and lack oftop end speed,my dealer told me of this back when we had our 03 rx1's and low and behold mine was off about .040 thou. and we did move it,and it combined with my valve issue did net me more top end speed, and sense than i have got a hold of a quality centerdistance tool,as i always went for the offset tool on all my poos, and we used to measure the center on the poos as they dont have a neet tool made up like i now owne..

Mine was the same until I put tensioners on both sides of the engine and put a yamaha sled pro clutch alignment tool on it. Follow what John said to solve belt problems.

My turbo was way out of parallellism, engine had moved backwards on the clutch side by a lot. The front engine mounts have adjustability, there is a special tool for making the adjustments.

Clutch update. I was out on Wed put on about 80 miles. Clutch was pulling about 8,900/9,000 it is now up to 9,300/9,400. Springs helped a bit. Checked the center to center with a tape measure (didn't have a proper tool) Manual says it should be 270 mm. It is at best 264 mm. I know that may not be a very accurate way of measuring. Would 3 mm which is about 1/8" make a difference ????

its out 6 mills not 3, 270-264. this is the problem. one mill is almost 40 thou. times 6 equals 240 thou. get the proper tools and set it up correctly, and your rpms will be back.
