i did a search???
So i was riding today and out of the blue the yellow light on the dash comes on and i lose hp. and roll to a stop. I still have power to the dash and code 81 is showing. I turn key off and try to start. nothing but dash lights and the high beam light is on only i didn't turn it on.I try again to start and the starter clicks no go but the fan is running. So i look at code sheet and its "grip warmer short detected" I wiggle the wires going into, down the riser and give it a shot. it starts. No more code. so i ride 70km. i finally come to a road and figure i should have a closer look. sitting at idle i start to play with the high low beam switch it starts to sputter and code 81 pops up. i turn it off. fan is on again so i throw snow on running boards. start sled and drive on no code. stop at restaurant and before turnning off i play with the high low switch. again code 81 and rough running.i have lunch.go to start after lunch i have dash power but know pump power or starter power.i turn key flip high low beam wiggle wires get some clicks on the starter but nothing. so i lossen the 2 screws that hold the high low and hand shock ajuster a little and it fires up. I could go on a little more but you get the idea i am able to get it to show code 81 when its hot and when i play with the high low beam switch. Tolk the switch appart as much as i could and only found some cob webs.
So is it my grips shorting out or my high low switch. I can't get it to do it now that i took the light swich appart.
Any suggestions on where i should start to look for the problem would be a big help.

Thanks

Usually you will only get a code when there is a loose connection (Usually yellow wire),

Code 81 is a minor code that clears automatically by shutting off & re-starting the sled.

Hope this helps,

that would be where the wires come off the bars and collect in the upper engine compartment????? Where the rubber, bag, blader, pouch looking like thing covers up a bunch of conections???
I was wondering if it will give me a code if my thumb or high low beam switch is screwy?

I will start by looking for conections.

Thanks

Code 81

BK, I had the exact same thing happen to me 2 weeks ago. The problem was in the wiring harness just above the primary clutch you will find 6 or 7 brown ground wires in a square plastic block. Mine had one shorted out, it looked burnt. I soldered all the grounds together and it started right up and have not had any problems since. Hope this helps.

I had this happen to my 06 attak yesterday. When running wo the yellow lite would come on and code 81 showed up but the sled ran fine.If I just drove it normally the light would not come on.Just when we drag racing. I do have rockmeister hand warmer kit on also. Will take it apart and have a look to see what it is. Kind of bummed as this is the first time I had a code show up but least it is a minor one.

Had the problem yesterday... Found that my connector was loose. I put a little electrical tape on them to hold them tight... Only started after I put the handle bar riser on...

I just had the same trouble as you and a couple others, mine was the black grounding block in the same location. There is a detailed post I put up with pics. Look in the electrical section near the bottom of the 4 stroke forum or go to my profile to find my posts and that will get you there. What a pain this was to find. My connector was also burnt through. Definately worth a look there Black knight.

Thanks guys. I did a big run on Saturday with no problems. Its in the
Garage right now and I am going over it in the next couple of days.
(we got over an 1inch of rain last night and today) so i have some time.
I will look at the places you describe to me. will also check out your post.
I'll post back with my findings :rocks:

found it. right where you said in the wiring harness. in between the battery and the primary clutch. the one with 6 i think, black grounding wires in it. 1 was fried and the grounding pin had arcing on it. spliced them altogether and soderd them all together. Hope this is the end of that.
Thanks a lot duste for the post. and crewchief for get'n the pics up.
this took me about an hour cuz you told me of your experience.
If this is a common problem as we put miles on these machines, everyone needs to know where these grounding blocks are.

Thanks again guys for the lesson.

Glad you found it, that should be the end, mines been perfect now for the last 300 miles and some hard running, glad we could help. No go sleddin :)

It's burried inside the wiring harness over the primary clutch, you will have to cut open the harness to gain access. Check out my pics in the 4 stroke electrical forum page , it's located at the bottom of the menu page, shows you everything you need to find it.

here some pic doc 10 i'm pointing to the problem block with screw driver
Had to remove a little tape to get to it.doc 11 i'm popping out the grounding
pin that connects them altogether. was lots of arcing on the two pins farthest away from the tip of the screwdriver and the plastic holding block was black/melted on that side.
