Hi all,
Trying to get a family members 06 Vector running. It's been sitting in the garage for 5 years and hasn't been run. I changed the oil, chaincase oil, and got it started, it idles fine but I'm getting a code 84 and check engine light coming in every so often, enough so that the sled isn't rideable.
There doesn't appear to be any problem with the throttle cable, what other causes are there? While running it today I did get a couple back fires, could bad gas cause this code?

84 is TORS.
A bad speedo sensor can set it off too. Will it register speed with the track off the ground on a stand?
Look for rust on the driveshaft "gear" under the secondary clutch since it's been sitting for so long. How many miles on the sled?
Otherwise, bypass the TORS if you can't get it figured out.

About 5000 miles on the sled. Will have to check if it registers speed while on the stand. If it doesn't is that indicative of a bad speedo sensor?
How do you bypass the system? I know on older sleds it was pretty easy...same story on the 4strokes?

It can be yes, that's why I suggested it.
Yes it's easy. Under the handlebar pad, find the pairs of single black wire, one end with black connector, the other with white. Unplug them, and plug the two coming from the engine/ecm side together.
I can't remember which color is which, but it'll be obvious which is coming from the engine and which is coming from the handlebars.

Thanks, catman! Might end up just bypassing, it seems to run fine when the tors isn't acting up.

It doesn't take much sticking, or just the opposite, slack, in the throttle cable to set TORS off.
Inspect close again for binding or excess slack before you bypass it though.

Yes, try to avoid the bypass of TORS, it's there for a good reason. If the handlebars/riser were adjusted, or throttle re positioned, would cause that as well. But a sticky throttle cable could easily cause it.

Thanks for the response. Throttle/riser/etc has never been adjusted on the sled. Took it in this morning as I reached the end of my abilities. Throttle cable looks to be fine, doesn't appear to be binding anywhere nor too tight. Mechanic seems to think it's a faulty throttle position sensor. Going to see if we can get one today, if not or if that doesn't solve the problem probably going to bypass temporarily.

Just in case someone else runs into this problem..it turned out to be a dirty tps. Shop apparently took it apart and cleaned it as it's been fine since...

I don't believe a speed sensor has any effect on the throttle override system. There are only to sensors in that circuit, the throttle position sensor on the carbs and the throttle switch on the handle bars.

I beg to differ Grizz.
I had the speedo sensor go out on my 2006 RS Nytro. It set off the TORS.
I noticed the speedo quit, along with whatever code and check engine. Came to a road crossing, and after I had totally let off the throttle to an idle, when I took off, got up to an estimated 15 MPH, TORS kicked in and code 84.
I shut it off, restarted, and it was fine until I'd totally let off throttle again. Luckily I was within 5 miles of home, but had to restart multiple times in the process after letting all the way off the throttle.
I bypassed the TORS and rode with no speedometer for a few days until the new sensor came. Replaced it, hooked TORS back up and all was right with the world again.

Never actually ran one with a bad sensor but I've ran the engine up through the rpm range without a belt installed and it never triggered the TORS. Maybe the TORS had previously been bypassed and I didn't know that. Next time I have one in the garage I'll disconnect the speed sensor and take it for a ride to test that.

Happened twice on my 06 Attak. Speedo bearing went, wiped out speedo pickup, threw the 84 code. I of course, didn't KNOW that would happen the first time. Went through all the same shenanigans trail side to get it back to Munising. Got back and a buddy mentioned some metallic squealing coming from my sled. YUP, bad bearing and boogie red up speedo pickup.

The 07 RS manual states that a malfunctioning speed sensor will trigger the TORS. The speed sensor sends the signal to the meter and then a signal is sent from the meter to the ECU.

Correct. A few years ago I was riding one night and came across a stranded apex throwing this code. I noticed the speedo showing a speedo reading(fluctuating), even though the machine wasn't going anywhere. Looked down at the driveshaft bearing and saw the problem.
