Cold start test

It's a problem with the relay. It may click but doesn't send power to the pump. There is a replacement from Yamaha that is solid state. The part number on this new relay is 8GN-81950-00-00 and it can be identified by its red casing.

Thanks for the quick response Mooseman!

Would my sled being a 2013 not have a "newer" relay? Is the relay you mentioned part of an update, should it be free? I am assuming solid state = no moving parts and better for cold staring. Maybe I should have just taken my relay out and warmed it in the house? Is it located near the battery?

Although not part of a tech bulletin or anything, you could push your dealer to get it replaced on Yamaha's dime since your sled is new and is failing to start.

Just ordered the relay from Port Yamaha. fingers crossed I get it before I leave for my trip.
Anyone know what relay it is to replace like second from the right or something? I suppose it might be self explanatory when I get down to seeing the relays or just disconnect them one by one until I don't hear the fuel pump cycle.

It's in the repair manual under brakes (yeah, I know) . I believe it's the bottom row second last towards the rear of the sled as installed. Not at home so I can't verify.

Mooseman, I have noticed in the online Yamaha parts manual that the relay part number that you mentioned is indeed on a 2014 MP but not a 2013. In the "Electrical 1" section the new relay is actually an additional item (number 31). Do you know which relay on my 2013 needs to be replaced (fuel pump)? I see the 2013 models have qty. 5 of relay 8HG-81950-09 where a 2014 has qty. 4, I am assuming it is one of these. I guess I could trial and error my through these if I get a new relay.

Thanks to all for your help so far, this forum is an amazing resource!

I think I can find it based on you previous posts, but did wonder.

What repair manual are you guys using and how can I get one!

How or where can you identify if a particular model for a particular year has "updates available"?

The manual is in the sticky / FAQ section. For the updates and tech bulletins, those are in its own section but are available to VIP members.

Btw, you should add your location to your location in you profile. It's a site requirement and it's nice to know.

Nix that. Finally at home. This is from the 2007 manual but I don't think it changed over the years. It's #12.

Thanks Mooseman, Picked up the new relay today from my dealer, no charge. They aware of the problem in great detail and had quite a few of the new ones in stock, it seems there are many yammy sled owners looking to replace their relays! Will replace it on Sat. just in time for the rain! :o|

Location added ;)!

Lucky you. None of mine has them in stock so I have to wait till Wednesday. BTW, you might want to pick up another and replace the Load Control relay #11. My son's FX was acting wacky, no lights or reverse and the gauge pod was giving error er-1 and wouldn't go.

I will try to get another one for the Load Control. Does the starter use the old style too? Maybe a total of 3 new ones should be swapped in? Perhaps Yamaha could offer to replace all relays in previous MY just to be safe!

Unfortunately, the starter uses a solenoid type relay and is high current so this tiny relay would fry. It is also failure prone but more because of the current burning the contacts and so on rather than freezing. If stuck, you could use a screwdriver across the two posts on the solenoid to get it started.
