Dealer Profit

I have also found some dealers who are agressive on there pricing by around $2K discounts out in NY. It would be nice to have more information when working a deal so we can allow for dealer profit. But right now with the incentives Yamaha is offering with 0% down 0 Payments and 0 interest till March of 08. That looks like a very attractive offer.

It would be nice to have a pricing guide like Edmunds for cars.

Just My 2 cents.

;)!

no offense MXD but maybe your dealership is leading you to believe that (fake invoices or whatever) because SALES ARE PAID ON THE GROSS PROFIT?

AND/OR maybe there's some incentive money coming to all the dealers from yamaha...after all...theres no snow and the economy sucks?

I don't care what cost is. I called around price shopping and I think your figure is way off.

You are certainly entitled to think that but I am actually a GSM at a dealership and I have my net cost on every unit ever made at my fingertips. 8600 is a whopping loss.

I can respect that you work at a car dealership, my father in law actually owns a used car store. I know the name of the game when it comes to numbers and profit and loss. I don't think many sled dealers are going to start dumping sleds at a loss in December. My cousin just bought a Attack GT, for less than 9K this AM, from a different dealer in a different state. I am not trying to discount your pricing knowledge but I think I would check your numbers. BTW, we need some frigging snow!!!!

MXD is bang on his #'s. There is no money in sleds..none. There are some bonuses here or there but that is eaten up quickly with finance charges. The ATV market is the same..you have to do HUGE volume and hope things break, which they don't lol. That's my biggest peev..people who buy at cost then bitch about the dealer's service. You can't have it both ways. And sj I was the general manager which meant I bought the inventory, paid for the inventory and set all of the prices...no fake invoices here.

Ported Hornet, we are a multi line powersports dealer. AC, Polaris, Yamaha, BMW, Suzuki, Honda, and Kawasaki. Not a car dealer.

To the gentleman above your post, I know how the entire process works. I recieve the holdback checks and deposit them into our account. I know the whole story including rebates from the manufacturter and ordering incentives. If it costs a dealer 1.5% to floor these units, sometimes its cheaper to take a loss today knowinig they will be here this time next year if they are not gone by next month. Its a panic sell. Every day they are here, they become more expensive to the dealer.

Cool! I hear ya, I guess the dealer lost money on me! I just can't see being in biz to lose money. Oh well, as for the comment on dealer service I usually do my own work on sleds. Not to sure about the 4 strokers though. To be honest when I got my sled home I noticed a scratch in the hood, but I did not even mention it. I am a pretty easy guy to please. I would just be happy with some snow!

We were in the sled business to suppliment our summer business. It kept the employees working instead of getting laid off for the winter. Sometimes you have to take a bit of a hit to keep your employees....and besides I LOVE sleds. I'm out of in it now and the big reason (to be honest..) was the snowmobile buyer. I really couldn't understand why someone buying a $10,000 sled would drive around the province to save $50 then have the nerve to bring it to me for warranty work because I was closer!!! See...I'm already getting worked up!!...where's the snow????????????????

PH, if a dealer hasn't sold 80% of his sled inventory by Christmas, its panic time. An Apex cost a dealer about $110 a month in flooring/interest. If that sled is not gone by now, count on it being there next fall which will mean it cost the dealer over $1100 in flooring/interest before they realistically have a shot at selling it again and when that shot comes, it will be a non current model by that time. Lose 1000 now and free up the cash or lose it later and keep your cash tied up?

Thats why there are crazy deals out there right now.......PLEASE trust me on this one.

That's how I picked up a new leftover 06 RTX last February for $7,700. Dealer took a smaller loss then instead of letting it add up over the spring, summer and fall months to come :ORC

I know all about floor planning, thats why we pay cash for 1/2 of the million dollar inventory on our car lot. I also realize that you can't make money on every unit you sell. Some you make out great, others might lose some to make the deal or to get rid of older inventory. With that being said, some dealers need get a clue they need to up front about their best price and advertise it that way. Many of the prices that are advertised are MSRP. Most educated sled buyers know what MSRP is and will not pay it.

It is sad that dealers are losing money on sled sales. It really doesn't suprise me with the crappy winter we have had over the last few years and the economy!

Doc,

That is cool that you sell sleds to keep your employees working in the winter. Their are not many folks that would do such a nice gester these days. I take my hat off to you are your dealership!

I was told by the guys at my local dealer. They don't make any money selling sleds. He said they even lost money on them last winter. He said the money in parts & accessories as well as service. He did say selling bikes/Atv was profitable. I hope winters start getting better soon. :o|

That hits the nail on the head! If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is if you are gonna bust your local dealer in the chops to save $500 by buying from another, you deserve to get turned down or stuck at the end of the list for warranty work at that local shop, imo. Try owning your own business boys then maybe you might catch on. I would much rather pay my dealer a profit as long as his price is competitive then get stared at and not helped with any issues on my sled during the riding season... End result is your local dealer may not be there next year if you don't figure out there is some give and take in buying!
