Dealer Updated '07 FX Link - Not '08 Billet WTF?

Dealer tried to charge me to fix my link even though I told him on 3 different occasions that yamaha was going to cover the repair. All he did was replace the link known as Bracket 2 part number 8GC-47416-00-00 with the updated part 8GC-47416-01-00. Looks exactly the same to me and its not billet. I'm calling yamaha today to find out what parts should have been installed on my sled so the link doesn't break again. I don't think he even called yamaha to find out what to do with my sled.

Also got charged $40 for new sliders part number SMA-8E792-00-HP. All the sliders I find in the online parts fiche are less than $10 a piece. What's the deal with these $20 a piece sliders? Didn't ask him for anything special to be installed.

Update: Just got off the phone with Yamaha. Product specialist said I got the correct part to fix the problem ... But feel free to call them back if I have any issues with the updated part. Wish I could get that in writing.

Seems like there is 2 different update kits, the cheap one that breaks again, and the billet one. I put 1600 hard miles on the billet update, everything is good. Old style was only good for 700 or so miles....
Can someone post a picture with the non billet update please?

Looks the same

The "cheap" link update part looks exactly the same as the old one. I'll post a pic tonight. I figured I would get the cheap fix since I'm out of warranty. Oh well - I'll cross my fingers that it doesn't break again.

I think the pieces coming off the shaft are doubled up right where it breaks. I wonder if people with Y.E.S. are getting the good fix, while others...?

YES isnt covering any of this.Coming right through Yamaha. If dealer went through YES it could be problem since they dont seem to know about the Factory kit.

I keep hearing about this link issue, does anyone have a picture or description of where this is? Just another thing I'm trying to learn about on the new sled.

When this link breaks, what happens, how will I notice and how will it affect the ride quality?

Thanks,

Rick

Aw, Crap

Well...no need for an answer. I think I found out where the problem is. I just went for a little ride this afternoon and halfway through (halfway because I turned around as soon as it happened) the rear of my Phazer started bouncing up and down. Sure as crap, the linkage broke where the front mount of the rear shock is located. So I'm assuming this is the weak point? I've been reading about people and their issues "I hardly drove it at all, never drove it hard" etc, and I guess they're right. I always take it easy over moguls, I do not jump the sled, and bang, this part breaks. Pretty sad.

So anyways, being as I bought it in the US and I'm Canadian, I'm not sure how much luck I will have getting it warrantied, so if anyone can confirm the part number I need (are the numbers in the first post of this thread correct, and I need the billet part?) I will see about replacing the part myself...if I can't get warranty done.

Sad days...

Rick

Not sure of all the Part #'s but its more than just the link that gets replaced.Hopefully you still get the kit.Otherwise I believe price was well into $600 US to buy it all.

I don't think there will ever be a recall. Even though there seems to be a large number of failures on these forums, it still seems to be a small percent of the entire fleet according to Yamaha.

that's to bad, wish they would re-design and fix

I have been quoted $285.00 for the kit, billet pieces and all. The dealer (no warranty of course since I bought in the US and I'm in Canada) says they're in stock and I should have it Thursday. I also got the "we've never heard of that before", but after he found the kit from Yamaha he indicated that they had only sold a couple of FX's from their lot, and all the GT's etc have been fine.

So, I guess, after I get the upgrade kit installed, is there anything I can do to ensure this won't happen again? Turn spring preload down, soften up the compression damping, etc? Like I said before, I am not a mogul jumpin' Monster, so I don't need everything setup as such, I just got a good price on an FX...
