DIY CAI

One thing to be aware of when pricing "cheaper" air filters is they all don't flow the same. I made this mistake when building my last bike. I went with the "cheaper" air filter option and had a hell of a time getting my jetting right. When I finally ponied up and purchased the K&N filter, BINGO, air flow restored, bigger jet sizes( more air flow!!!) worked as they were supposed to. The cheap filters were choking my carbs off at higher RPM's, The K&N's flowed much more freely.
Sometimes it is worse to spend too little than spend too much.

I built mine this summer. K/N 20* offset 6 inch tapered filter mounted close to the frogskin. I have the outerwear for it also.

This is true, but moreso when you use diff filter materials....many of these ram cones you see on ebay are exact same materials as k&n. I like the k&n myself as you can get the offset angled flange I want and more fitment choices.

Another thing we have not mentioned, be sure you ALL USE A SOCK on your setup. You can go to outerwears, choose the option to search by size, and match up your filter specs to the correct sock. You will get a lot of snowdust thru front screen on trail riding and it will also help keep filter cleaner of belt dust ect.

What is the ID dia. is it 3" that is what I need,as my set up now uses that dia.,ben all over e-bay and K&N still have problem finding one 6" long, with short flange 3/4 length and tapered from 5" to 3" and would like one inverted.

just go to k&n and look them up guys, they have every single filter and all specs with pics.

Really cant be any easier, as long as you know what you want.

Dan,i am looking for an inverted one, with a 3"pipe ID and straight type,no angle bends,5 or 6" base tapered to 3.5 or 4" top, overall length 6-6.5" with a flange length of uner 1" to 3/4" most I saw were 1.75 flange length and 6 or 7" base and top 5" and overall length of 5-12"

Is this what you mean by open end?
Yes,on the K&N filter side they call that design,X-stream and others inverted design, but I cant find the size I need. My flange ID is 3" base OD needs to be 5" top OD 4" or smaller is ok and Height or O/L 6" and if it has a flange length of 1.75 that would be ok I think. So what site did you get that blue filter I am seeing?

I am making my design to be much smaller, If you are around 5" diam that IMO blocks too much airflow to clutches, and that is one goal of mine to have air flow thru the guard.

That is what my CAI is now from ulmer, and my clutches were great last year, but I wanted one smaller on top to not hit my tubes. This one on K&N or Amazon is 6" base top 4.75 height 5.5 flange ID fits three sizes,3"3.5" and 4" and it is a X-tream or inverted for $26.99 but not sure my hood will fit w/a filter 6" dia. I can stick it further in toward frogskin opening, maybe that will help. I understand the need to flow air to clutches, but the stock box blocked more than any filter dident it?

I know Pete, I guess you are not hearing me? lol

This is why Im not a fan of the alpha kit, its just way too large IMO. 3" flange is not needed, and takes up too much space for cooling. Sure you can make or use whatever you like, but I want a design with more benefits overall.

For about 15 bucks you can make a diff setup elbow.

I just pieced one together with the K&N SN-2510 including a K&N pre-filter, polished 90 2.5" aluminum elbow and 2.5" silicone coupler including clamps for $156Cdn shipped. Not bad at all considering that price includes the pre-filter which I don't think comes in any of the kits offered.
