draining coolant

How and where do you drain the coolant from? I have a new phazer fx and have had nothing but overheating problems. After reading many posts here about changing the coolant I have decided to do just that. Unfortunately the owners manual doesn't really tell you squat about how to do certain things. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

David

Our Phazer only overheated once on a low snow, icy trail during engine break-in (around 40 miles). A tight engine in combination with no cooling snow and it was fully expected to overheat. My Attak overheated about 5 miles prior to the Phazer overheating on that same trail.

Other than that, it ran like a champ. I'll say this, during prep of the sled this fall, I started the Phazer up and noticed only one side of the forward tunnel heat exchanger getting warm. I figured it had air in the system. I started it a couple more times and it still only warmed up on one side (left side). I then undid the coolant tank cap and started it up until extremely warm/hot to get the thermostat to open and since the coolant bottle is the highest part of the system, and air would be allowed to escape. From that point on, both sides of the heat exchanger have gotten hot. I'm not sure if what I did was a coincidence or not, but it seems to have worked.

My dealer has never heard of the problem. I let them take it for a couple of days and they couldn't make it overheat. I get it back and in 5 minutes it overheats, only on trails though. As long as I'm in powder its ok but my riding is more trails. I now have about 120km on it and everyone has been a pain in the butt with the overheating. The only thing my dealer did say is to get the 500km breakin done and then maybe it will be better! It will take all season to get it there at this rate. The only place I could get coolant out was the hose at the bottom of the rad but that is messy and painfully slow. I'm hoping someone can tell me a better way.

Struggling with the phazer,

Do yourself a favor. Go buy at autoparts store antifreeze checker. Yamaha throws machines out with lots of sleds with near 100% antifreeze. This is documented on other threads.

Check it. If you have too much antifreeze the sled will overheat much easier. Unless you run in far north canada, you need much closer to 50/50 mix and you might even add some "water wetter" which helps the exchangers transfer heat.

In many cases this will fix your issues. I know, I bought two RX-1 and they both had 100 % antifreeze and overheated frequently until I found it by accident...(coolant looks too green).

Good luck.

Hi. Try bleeding the air out of your system using the bleeder on the top cooler line just in front of the coolant bottle. (if your going to replace your coolant). I like to elevate the front of the machine to help the air to rise. Add coolant to the bottle till it runs out the bleeder ( i put a small clear line on the fitting to save coolant and avoid a mess) then put the cap and clamp back on. Top up the jug to the cold level and run the machine and so on.... hope this helps :tg:

Well first ride with new coolant at a 50/50 mix and still same problem. Soon as I get out of the powder onto a trail and the sled overheats :o| :o| :o| . Will talk to my dealer tomorrow and see if they have any new news but looks like I will have a phazer for sale very soon! :die

Hey Dave, before you get to upset, you need to get it broke in with lots of km's. My FX was overheating for the first 6 - 700kms, now I've got 1300 on it and haven't seen the light on. And that is running absolutely wide open all the time. The other thing I noticed was after I put the 1.5" track on it got better. Seems like the stock one didn't move enough air and snow and the cooler would ice over. And once it's iced over its not doing much of anything. Mostly just be patient and get miles on it, I'm sure it will get better.

rode 130 km on groomed trail today, was running about 9000 rpm all the way, when we came back i started to run a bit faster, like 10 500 rpm and the overheat light came on,thats weird cause i have over 700 km now and its the first time it comes on.did have some loose snow on trail so should of cooled enough, noticed my antifreeze was low maybe 1 1/2 inch below level, anyone else had there antifreeze go down and would that be the cause, otherwise it was a beautiful and COLD day,-20c and windy but the sled isnt cooler than my rx warrior to ride

After you guys try everything else, think about the FAN.
My Venture Lite has NEVER overheated, even when I ran the machine 40 miles on GLARE ICE/ZERO SNOW. Ah and that was before the sled was totally broke in.
1895 miles now and never seen the overheat light.
My dealer says that all phazers are pre-wired and pre-sensored, all you need is to plug in the fan unit...

Well I just put 100km on today and only overheated once, near the end of the trip. Throughout the day I would clear all the ice/snow out from around the heat exchanger. I think that helped. Even so....still did overheat. I have never been out on it yet without it overheating. Still frustrating for a brand new sled but I am learning to deal with it. I am not prepared to dish out another $100 or so for the fan for a sled that is new.

Dave, ecopter stumbled on the way to "burp" the air out of your system. Just leave the radiator cap off until the machine is warm, you'll see after the thermostat opens that the coolant will gurgle and be sucked down into the system while air is burped up to the top and out. Keep topping off with coolant until when engine gets pretty hot, it'll start "puking" coolant, then put cap on with engine still running-- no more air! Coolant won't flow through every part of the system with air trapped inside. This is the procedure car mechanics use.
