Second time now....
Feels like the same issue as the first time. Got power, but no start. This happened last year in the UP and it was the ground on the wiring harness. Had the service update done, new updated harness AND had everthing soldered in place to avoid a loose connection issue. I cannot confirm it the harness again, but its either an electrical issue or the starter as the relay is fine and fires each time I try to start it.
More frustrating than anything is the fact that we have 100% dependancy on the electrical system to work to start the sled, not pull start ability (even if you were strong enough to pull it over). Shouldn't there but some redundancy in the starting system. I ride some remote and hard to reach places in MN and if I had to take a break trailside halfway between Ely and Silver Bay, with this issue, I'm not sure what I woould do.
So, I will drop it off tomorrow, and hopefully get teh reps name and number so I can have a conversation about what's the deal on electrical gremlins.
If it were not for these two issues, this would be the best sled Ive ever owned. Now I can't trust it...

Got a question for everyone. My sled died on the trail end of last February when I was doing about 55mph. Was baffled. Smoked like a son-of-a-gun, stunk to high heaven. Got back down by home and took her in to be worked on. Sure enough. Starter. Bummer was the bugger was on backorder and they didn't get my sled fixed til the snow was gone. Got her out for the first ride of the season a week and half ago and not even 5 miles on the new starter and she died again. Same exact scenario: smoke, smell. Took her in and sure enough a post on the new starter had gone bad. Has anyone had the replacement starter go bad on them too or am I just jinxed? My sled is an '07' and I'm wondering if I should just trade her in. With all the bulletin updates she's been in for the service manager and I are on a first name basis and I've hardly put any miles on (about 800). It's truly bumming me out. Any other victim's? Glad we bought the extended warranty. It's already paid for itself.

Here is the the issue, I do NOT believe that the new starters are locktited... at least mine wasn't. Unfortunately, most techs don't read TY and don't have the info about the ins and outs of the machines. New starter or not, if the tech who worked on the sled didn't locktite the bolts on the new starter then I would expect it has a good chance of failing too. I would talk to the tech when you have it repaired this time and ask him to loctite the bolts (with red loctite) before re-assembling.


Actually he may have tried fixing it but it was beyond repair.To burn up the post on starter there would have to be a short in the starter itself.If the starter bolts come loose it would be a good idea to check all the windings and even magnets to make sure everything is in order before putting it back together correctly aligned.

check your plugs. I fouled my plugs on my Phazer for the first time in 8600km, 2 weeks ago.

It was the starter, it came loose and is frozen requiring replacement. Bad news, 3 months out of warranty, good new, dealership worked with Yamahs to warranty the parts ($400 for the starter). I just need to pay labor. Bad news, needs to remove motor to replace starter so it's going to be a 3-4 hour effort. I can't complain about that.
I credit yamaha for stepping up, but also knock them for putting in a starter that worked its way loose
This should be a non-issue.
I am relieved its not the harness though, that would have pretty much sucked for everyone with the new harness on the 07s.

Save yourself the cash! See Cannondale's post on front frame remove (I believe it is sticky) and do the job yourself. I would say you can do it in about 2 hours.

You can get at it if you remove the belly pan and shave off the tab sticking out...you'll se it. The tab doesn't do anything only get in the way of removing the starter.

Got a call from the dealer who had my starter in his hand and said the post was indeed fried to a crisp. Decided to call Yamaha and they agreed it would be a good idea to replace the regulator too. They should have that part in and my sled done by tomorrow or Wednesday. Bummer is we got a bunch of rain over the weekend throughout the state and trails are trashed. Now I'm back to waiting for snow to fly. I absolutely LOVE to sled. All summer long I'm chomping at the bit for winter to arrive. What a drag when junk like this happens. I love my sled! Whoever says a Phazer isn't a great women's sled is off their rocker. You just have to know how to ride'em. It's no sit down, relax, and tool along at 40 ride. There is, however, something to be said for holding off on buying a first year model and letting a company get the bugs worked out. Hope this starter and new regulator fare better! Thanks for the input you guys. Any and all is appreciated.
