Engine oil consumption

I have just under 8000 miles on my sled. I seem to be going through motor oil just lately. I don't see any puddles from leaks and I wondered if running washboard hard was putting it over into the intake. When I did a head gasket last year the cylinder walls looked good, you could still see crosshatch and no vertical sctratches. Any insight?

How much oil are you using in a set amount of miles?

I had run about 650 miles so far and the light came on, it took almost a quart. Ran another 120 miles and the light was on. It took most of a quart.

Are you checking the oil at operating temp? I would bet a leak somewhere. Either oil pan or oil tank seam. If the motor is burning that much oil it would not even run well.

I don't smell any oil burning and it runs great. Both times the light came on it was real cold around 0 or a little less. The light comes on during the warm up cycle. I will have to check the oil when it's hot, it is possible that the thick cold oil is loading in the engine and not flowing to the tank. I replaced the pan gasket when I pulled the engine to do the head gasket.

My oil light has came on a couple times during the warm up cycle. If I turn the sled off and restart it the light doesn't come back. I have also seen the light come on when tipped over but it goes away when back level. I have checked the oil and it's fine... Ideas?

Try switching to full synthetic Yamalube or Amsoil 0w40. Also always check your oil at full operating temp. Your sled will appreciate the 0w40 on cold starts in our rediculously cold climate. And everyone knows to not screw the dipstick in for checking the level right. Sorry had to state the obvious. This is directed at the starting statement and not the consumption

1975FA, could you please add your location as per site rules. Thank you.

It's somewhat normal for the low oil lite to come on when its real cold out. I run 0w40 yamalube and when it gets down around -30 or so I have seen the light come on after start up. Usually goes out again within 30 sec. or so. Or if I turn the sled off and restart it.

If the motor is in good shape and hasn't been sitting for months you can check it before starting it to see where it's at. Mine doesn't usually change after I run it.

Also check your oil screen on the bottom of your oil tank. Take it out and clean with brake cleaner.

This isn't something I hear a lot about.....how do you get to it?

On the bottom of the tank there's a elbow wit two Allen head cap screws holding it on. Just going off my memory but I believe that's how you get at it. You'll have to drain the oil and take the hose off the elbow.
