Hey Everyone,
Just got my exhaust installed last night and went for a ride today. The sled will not idle. Come to a stop and it just dies, need to hold the throttle to keep it running. The Apex is stock other than the exhaust. The more immediate problem is that in deep snow it chokes and dies (I like to ride in deep snow). I have never had an issue until today with this. It started to trench and the exhaust began to plug and it couldn't produce enough power to get me out, causing a perpetual stuck. I will contact Excell tomorrow and see what my options are. Has anyone else had these problems?

I'll tear into it tonight. The stalling is concerning, but the snow plugging up the exhaust is a deal breaker for me. Any time the sled gets trenched in the exhaust can't breathe, and it's hell getting out without power. I contacted Excell and they are going to get back to me.
 
I have the same exhaust on my Apex and ran into the same problem when I first installed it. If you search here and on other forums you will see it is a common problem. The solution is to build a deflector of sort to keep the snow from being thrown into the outlet of the exhaust. I called Excell about it and they said they knew of no such problem so you are probably on your own, like the rest of us.
 
I called them today and they are going to look into it (but also told me that they have never heard of any problems). I checked under the sled and the exhaust is fine, not dents or damage. Does your sled die when you let off the gas too? I have owned my sled since 2007 and I have never had a single issue with drivability. And all I changed was the exhaust. I am either going to return it or see if I can upgrade to their newer system that comes out the back under the seat. The way it sits now I am out $600 and am back to my stock system.
 
I have the mountain lite undertunnel and have had a couple times where it would die on me, but this is very rarely. I also found I have a modded airbox so this may help as well but I have no idea.
 
Even going down a hard packed trail the sled won't idle, if I let off the gas it just dies. That does have me worried, because it has never died on me until I installed this exhaust. If I hold the throttle for a minute it will then idle on its own but that isn't a solution. It now also requires some throttle to start, never needed that before either. Still waiting to hear back from Excell. It's running like a poorly setup carb'd sled.

The issue I had with the exhaust getting plugged was that I couldn't get the sled out, it didn't have the RPM's or power to pull out of the trench it made. In years past in similar situations I could get out with much less digging.

I would put $$$$ it that your intake valves are in need of adjustment. An easy way to do a quick check is to do the POOR MANS LEAK DOWN TEST (copyright/pat. pend hahah) First move the piston to TDC. Next insert the hose from a compression tester (10mm) into the spark plug hole. Put your mouth on the end of the hose and try to force air thru. If the air seems to bounce back your valves are ok. If no bounce and you loss pressure while trying to force air thru valves are not closed. I had the same problem and the intake valves were way out and not closing. I would not have believed this because the owners maual says the first adjustment is at 20000kms (12000miles) 9 other 1000cc 4 stroke yami owners that I know had the same valve problem ranging from 1500miles to 4000 miles. I checked mine this way at 6000 miles and the intakes were out, exhast valve in spec. Big power difference, and easier to start at elev when warm.
Cheap way to check leak down. worked for me and 6 others.
 
Sorry about that, I ride mostly at Sea level to 3000 feet. Another suggestion was that my TPS was out but I checked and it ranged fro 16 (idle) to 95 (WOT). I'm going to put the stock exhaust back on and ride this weekend. Excell never called back today as they said they would. I'll call them tomorrow and see if I can just return it. I wonder if having the exhaust plugged and trying to get it unstuck damaged something in the engine. I distinctly remember how rich the exhaust smelled when I cleared the snow from under the tunnel.
 
My previous post was in haste (throwing man fit), I am changing it to reflect that Excell Motorsports has taken the unit back and are refunding my purchase price including the shipping. I gather that I must be in the minority with my issues, but I was much happier with my stock exhaust. I'd like to thank Aaron with Excell for helping me out, it is greatly appreciated!

For what it is worth the system that comes out behind the seat from Exell works pretty good, I have made several bike exhausts as well --- exiting over the top with no problem.

I do have a under tunnel that works pretty well with the exhaust going out forward, it will not choke out but still have a slight power reduction in the real deep slow slugging. As soon as it makes some speed it is fine again.

All under tunnel exhaust's have that , the rear facing ones are not worth looking at period unless you go up top.
 
i have the excell mtn lite and and 5000kms without an issue. espicially the lugging in deep snow, all i ride is powder and and i climb steep hills full thottle full rpm until i bury the thing in trench
 
muncher... can you explain or take a pic of your exhaust with forward facing exit? This doesnt make sense to me, as I see it would only plug up worse with the snow coming off the lugs right into the exaust??

I see know. You just modded the stock exhaust. I got the sled with just a single glasspack under there. Plus I dont have that large cast piece in anymore either.
I dont think it would work well having a 90* bend on the glasspack to get the exhaust to go forward. I may try moving my rear cooler and extend the exhaust right out to the snow flap.
