Alright guys, we had our annual fix-it day with our group and came across a fairly large problem with the exhuast donuts on on skyboz's 08 Nytro. He has about 2500 miles on his sled and the donuts were toast. My sled has 2200 miles on it, so we decided to take mine apart to see if the same issue was present. Fortunately, mine were mostly intact, but I don't think they could have made it through the entire year.

So.....if I were you, I would check them and probably replace them. LJ 452 said that he had the same issue on his Apex, but since he didn't notice it right away so it eventually ate away at his header pipe which had to be replaced.

We all decided that this is going to have to be one of those things that you will probably have to change every year along with your oil.

Where exactly are these donuts located? I'm assuming they are the exhaust gasgets at the tail end of the header that connects to the exhasut pipe. Is this correct?

Just to clarify, are we talking about part # 4 on the diagram?

well............. that sucks. thanks for the heads up. guess I gotta take a peek at mine now too. I was hoping the fixed that on the nytros, but apparently not the case.

I'll have to add that to my list of annual fall replacements. This is what was worn out on mine after 5200 kms (3250 miles)

- upper balljoints
- lower balljoints - changed mid season - got updated ones now.
- oil/filter change - 3rd change
- steering tie rod ends
- steering shaft bushings
- exhaust donuts - maybe?
- hyfax - changed mid season
- a-arm bushings
- rear skid - nylon sliders above center shock
- bolt for lower gear - chaincase
- drive belt - on my 4th one

Anyone notice anything else worth looking at?

How many miles did you have last year?

Obviously since you had a broken lower gear bolt, you changed your chain case oil?

I also had some slop in the spindle bushings for the ski mount.

Unfortunately the Exhaust donuts are continuing to be a weak link to the motor/emissions on Yamaha sleds. The good thing is it’s about half the work to inspect the donuts on the Nytro as it is the Apex. Actually if you were just checking you could probably get to them in about 10-15 minutes. Not happy about this though I really thought with the stiffer chassis that the Nytro’s would hold up much better. Maybe it’s not so much the flex as much as the heat that really causes these things to breakdown.

Had a bad rattle and found the donuts were junk

The famous RATTLE sound is usually the 1st symptoms on all 4 STROKES, the 5000kms/3000miles is the average life...I have a spare set of DONUTS in my tool box for that weekend you need to fix'r up!

I must be easy on the machine

at 10,200 miles I only had one donut that was gone. I did find lots of loose revits on the tunnel and exhaust.

No bushings front and rear, wheel bearings, track, shock rebuild, stud boy carbides, some touch up paint, and I'm ready for some snow.
