I will admit out front that my mechanical knowledge is really lacking but I was wondering why Yamaha doesn't go 4 into 1 or even 4 into 2 into 1 with the exhaust. My background in bikes tells me that this should be the way to go. This would allow significant weight savings and better performance? Correct me if I am wrong but I remember reading about the older 2 piped GSX-R's and the magazine said that the two pipes really aid in midrange but hurts in acceleration and on top. Maybe I'm way off base ??

my mechanical knowledge is lacking also, but a lot of ppl think that if u have one tail pipe, it looks like a butt hole...i myself like the twin piped look, as so do my buddies. i think the one pipe works really well for the mtn riders but not too well with trail riders

The answer is... IT DOES - 4 into 2 into 1. It just goes BACK into 2 to make it look cool. The weight of the extra elbow out the other side of the seat is negligible. There is only ONE muffler.

The stock pipe weighs 19lbs. My single Micron weighs 8. That's why I use it.

I remember reading the original report published in one of the magazines about the development of the RX-1 and the engineers went into great detail as to why they built the exaust the way they did. From what I remember, the engine achieved the highest torque numbers with the 4 into two by a wide margin.
Crazy MF, my bender can gave me similar weight savings.

As with most things, the oem exhaust is a compromise. The oem exhaust was likely designed to meet the broadest uses the machine may see. Are there exhausts that will perform better? Sure, depends on where in the torque and horespower curve you want that power though.
Just my two cents, the exhaust is likely to be more useful if you are looking for weight savings or a different sound. This obviously excludes turbos.

My Micron cost 200 bucks off ebay and I built the rest. Also, I got rid of all the covers and other gizmos that I didn't account for. Just a different way to slice the same pie. I like to build things myself when I can because it makes me feel all warm and giggley inside. Bender is good too.

Soooooooooooo, Has anybody tried different exhaust systems on the RX-1, that have gave them good all around gains in torque and hp? How do they fit? Do they seal good? Fit and finish and are they worth cash?

I got the White Knuckle, NOS-PRO has one on his RX.
Stainless, baffled design, beautifully made, it should last forever.
I like the tone and it saves around 8-9 lbs as I remember

Bender! I have compared them side by side and think it's a little better design and also think it sounds better. More of the 4 into 1 bike sound.Rotax! said:Soooooooooooo, Has anybody tried different exhaust systems on the RX-1, that have gave them good all around gains in torque and hp? How do they fit? What I like better about the design is the cross over. The bender actually looks OEM and according to the guy at WK flows slightly better ( I appreciated the honesty). WK actually welds in a tube (costs less to produce). The Bender also exits exactly like stock where the WK points up. IMHO I don't like the looks of it pointing up.

Splitting hairs here boys. Can you really notice 2 lbs or 2 hp?
I did this, you did that. It's all ok.

Not usually, but I was simply adding that they don't just sound good but you get those added benefits.crazymf said:Splitting hairs here boys. Can you really notice 2 lbs or 2 hp?
