kviper said:If you are talking speedo MPH your 11 is likely with in 1 MPH of radar and your 07 is reading 12 to 15% high. My 12 128" before Turbo and a friend's 11 144" XTX would both pull 110 on speedo on real good hard pack but as conditions get softer top end drops fast. It takes a good running stock sled to pull an honest 100 MPH on snow.thunderbolt said:Well my 2011 ever since new has only ever hit 100 on its own speedometer on a good day and my 2007 apex er 121 inch track wasn't any better. this all measured on a good hard packed rail line or lake , so ok guys you tell me whats wrong . as I said before my sled is flawless except for top speed and the o7 was the same flawless except for top speed
I'll definitely agree with the conditions being a factor. Only brave enough to pull top end on a lake, and unless it is a hard pack, frequently run strip on the ice, even a little bit of fresh snow will dramatically effect the top end.

not seeing a consistent 100 is what I figured , because the sleds runs perfect in all other ways

My 2013 Apex will not go over 88 - 89 MPH. I checked the EXUP and made a very minor adjustment.
I now have it at the dealership and they can't figure it out and they're waiting for a call back from Yamaha.
So my question is:
Has anyone removed the EXUP from their Apex?
What did you replace it with, if anything.
What improvements did you see in the low, mid and top end.
Any pictures?
Thanks

Above is a link to a Dyno Evaluation comparing a stock 2011 Apex SE to a stock 2010 Apex. There are also Dyno results on the 2011 SE with and without a functioning EXUP valve. You can see by the results that the EXUP certainly improves midrange horsepower if it is functioning correctly and the 2011 SE is making 163.7 HP @ 10,300 reguardless if the EXUP is working or not. My thought is that if you remove the EXUP you are throwing away that extra mid range power. If you only drive above 8000 RPM the EXUP has no benefit and should be removed to save weight.....
The trick is to ensure the EXUP system is functioning correctly!! I had checked and adjusted my EXUP system in accordance with Yamahahaha's Service Manual 3 or 4 times and it it was bang on each time. Turns out it was not bang on and probably never was as the valve was restricting the 4 exhaust ports.
Try adjusting your Exup the way I did using the link below. If it is opening fully with the engine running there will be no issue with your EXUP robbing horsepower...

2012 XTX stock motor and clutching, geared down one on top. I hit 120 on the speedometer on a ice road in the UP. Should put it at least 115 mph real speed by judging what guys are seeing on a gps run.

That is a great article about Keith. He is a great guy and really knows his stuff. Both my old Viper and my Apex came from Woodys.

Keep in mind that article about woody's sled had been modified in order to see those hp gains, this was not a show room stock sled,if you read dyno techs article, you see where they had to open up the pipe dia. from 35 to 38mm and in other areas plus advance the cam timing 5* to show those gains.john10toe said:rcp1018 said:I've notice a lot of guys are complaining about lack of power and its relational to the EXUP.

On a recent trip to Maine on a lake with 2 Turbo Cats, my 2011 Apex was leaving them on the "Big End"! I saw 114 MPH and conditions were not optimum for Top end runs. I checked adjustment of EXUP when I got back and it was slightly off, adjustments were made!

Thats good to know,i am sure the turbo's were stock for the most part, once a tune is installed and clutched properly it is difficult to keep up with 220-270 hp,but stock for stock alot of good running apex's will run with or past the procross turbo stock.Bob Miller said:On a recent trip to Maine on a lake with 2 Turbo Cats, my 2011 Apex was leaving them on the "Big End"! Now on the other hand,if you want to boost a stock cat motor up and still run 91 octane i have seen them in the 275 hp range, and on meth much more.kviper said:So what HP is a stock motor/Turbo Cat good for on 91 pump gas?

That's what I was wondering, how much boost a stock motor/turbo Cat can hold with 91 fuel and what HP it would make. A friend with an 07 Attak with stage 1 MPI at 6.5 LB said he ran 112 MPH at a 1000' speed run and a guy on new Cat had to go to 18 LB to beat him. Would that have been on pump gas?

Yes,mine was a TD v-19 stage 4 program, and the first three programs were all set up to run pump 91/93 octane, stage one or eco was 3 psi over stock,or 14 lbs,map 2 or powertrail was 17-18 lbs or 240-250 hp map 3 was 21-22 lbs and 270-280 hp and max map was 30 lbs shimmed waste gate and 320 hp. on c-16 octane.kviper said:That's what I was wondering, how much boost a stock motor/turbo Cat can hold with 91 fuel and what HP it would make. The 35mm head pipe to 38mm head pipe change is a OEM change that comes on all 2011 and newer Apex models. Also the 5* advanced cam timing is stock on the 2011 and newer Apex models too. Those were just references to items that have changed from the 2006 to 2010 models compared to the 2011 and newer models.
