Does anyone know if the factory oil is 0W30 Semi or 0W40 Full Synthetic. There is another older thread but it is unclear. Tried to save the oil on my 0 mile sled (changing track) but it hit my running board that was full of shavings from drilling out rivets lol.

On a side note, for 6 minutes of run time, this oil looks like it was just pulled out of the ground in Alberta and missed the refinery all together. Pretty dirty.

It’s 0-30

If you go to a 0-40 you will see a loss in performance also. And yes, it’s a noticeable loss, you will see less speed in same conditions and feel it in the seat of your pants if you are in tune with your machine.

I experienced exactly what Knapp said. I'm going back to 0-30.

Yup. Ran thinner yet 0-20 Redline in my Apex and RX1. Engine definitely was more responsive. Not sure I would go 0-20 on a Turbo motor though.

I run 0/40 yamalube no issues since day one.

Came with 0w30 semi and now run 0w40 Mobil 1 and runs same speeds and RPM as before.

Same here my sled pulled 132 mph on gps with 3 runs to back it up.

Not sure if they put a special break in oil in it, but they do want the first oil change done after 500 miles!
In 2017 and 2018 Yamaha recommended the 0-30 semi syn, but that changed last year to a 0-40 full syn oil.

I know the thinner oil is faster and may even be better on some components, but I am not sure why Yamaha wants 0-40 full syn, but that is what I have done, followed dealers recommended oil made for Yamaha snowmobiles.

I’ll just have to eat that snow dust from you 0-30 guys!!!!

I still struggle with the claims that 0-40 hurts performance, I'm not doubting but still. I like running full syn, maybe I will try 0-30 full syn when I fill her up.

Same here

Pro-stock cars run 0 and 2 weight oil for a reason! They don't want to give up any power or leave anything on the table. Those running 0-40 Mobile 1 should know that it is about a 35 weight or one of the lower viscosities in the 40 weight spectrum, so not quite as bad.

I run half 0-40 Mobile 1, and half 0-20 Quaker State Ultimate Durability. Both are in the top 10 in Rat540 blog to make the best 0-30 full synthetic blend IMO.

I've tested 30 and 40 weight oils back to back same day testing on an old stock RX-1 and the difference in performance was HUGE. I went from beating my buddies 800 Doo to getting outrun by it. It just did not "have it" running 40 weight oil, I could tell it just lost a step and racing my buddy confirmed my hunch was accurate, I surly lost some power with the thicker oil thru pumping losses. Came back home switched back to 30 weight and the performance came right back and I continued beating up on my buds 800 Doo again, neither one of could believe it, but he was right there with me and could see I changed nothing but the oil, I didn't even bother to change the filter for time constraints, we just wanted to see how the oil change could have affected it so much. I'll stick with 0-30 if thats what the manual calls for, there is no advantage to running thicker oil than need.

Rat540 blog here and it's good reading and awesome test reports.

I agree and believe your and many others reasoning behind the power and speed advantages of using the o/30 over the 0/40. I would be crazy and or foolish to even think of arguing with someone of your stature when it comes to performance or racing sleds. Your past years of racing wins speak for themselves!

I almost went with a non Yamaha syn oil this year, and did ask about purchasing a 0/30 full syn oil change kit fromYamaha, and they do not offer one, so I stuck with what they had. But My thought was the Mobil full syn that many have used on their turbo sleds for the past years. I just did not pull that trigger!! But I still wonder why Yamaha changed to a full syn 0/40 after 2 years of 0/30 semi syn. Do you think the thicker oil is better on certain components?
