Started my Venture last night after storage (dealer prep storage)Blew in clear line to push gas up to carbs worked great only problem that I have it does not want to idle and it sounds like it's not running on all cylinders.
This is a 2006 Rs venture bought in July of this year.Does it sound like the carbs have to be cleaned? :ORC

If your dealer winterized it then they should take care of it. You paid for it to be done right so if the carbs need cleaned then they did not do it right.

Yep, carbs need cleaned.

How much gas do you have in the tank? I've run into problems like that with a gallon or less in the tank.

I'd go for a messed up plug Glenn.
This has happened to couple of folks last season's starts.
It seems like two things so far would do that:
A) using storage fogging oil
B) several short starts of the engine without good warm up

I brought my Venture out of storage yesterday as well.

Also replaced both limiter straps.

Prior to summer storage, I installed two fuel line shut off valves, after a suggestion by one of our members. I ran the engine out of gas and fogged the carbs just before it died. I fogged the cylinders by removing the plugs. Also drained the gas tank.

Yesterday, I filled it with fresh gas, and primed the lines. Cranked for about 7 seconds, she started up but initially ran a bit rough, since the cylinders were fogged pretty heavy. Venture smoked quite a bit until the temp light went out. Let it run for a couple more minutes, and shut the motor down.

Replaced the plugs with the new ones gapped .029 thousanths, I will be running this year.

Started the sled up, she idles at 1,500 rpms, and is ready to go.

Last year I went by the book, and told my dealer the same. My Pilot Jets got gummed up because of the old gas. I brought this to my dealers attention, and he cleaned the jets, and resync'ed the carbs.

Concur, I would take the sled back to the dealer have him clean everything, and resync the carbs, so you'll be ready to go! ;)!

Hope this helps...

I'd try a set of plugs first too. I fouled one last season on the first start up and it ran like crap. This year all went well.

Before storage last spring, I added Seafoam to the gas (1 oz. to 1 gal.) and fogged the engine through the carbs. I did not run the carbs dry.

Last week, I fired up the sled. She started quickly and smoked quite a bit until the fogging oil burned out. After warming up, she ran very rough. So, I sprayed carb cleaner into the carbs and added 10 more oz. of Seafoam to the tank. (Seafoam ratio now at 2 oz. to 1 gal..) After letting the carb cleaner sit for about two hours, I started up the sled. At first, she ran rough, but then smoothened out.

In the past, I've always run the carbs dry. This is the first year I left the carbs wet. I'm going back to running the gas out of the carbs and fogging the engine via the spark plug holes.

Sounds to me like your carbs are gummed up. I'd bring it back to the dealer who summarized the sled. For anybody else, try running a 2 oz. to 1 gal. ratio of Seafoam in your first tank.

Hondo, are those shut offs the same as shown in Yamaha's accessory catalog? I'm thinking of fitting my '07 with these valves, as I will often have to transport the sled about 40 miles to a trailhead, and prefer to ensure that fuel isn't fed into the cylinders during transport.

Paul_C,

I got them from my dealer.

If you log in and go to my 12,000 Mile Report, go towards the bottom of page 1, where Maddogjeff and I have posts. Below Mark O's post are pictures of the fuel shutoff valves that I've installed.

Just went on line to the Yamaha parts catalog and saw an "in-line thermo plastic fuel shut off valve" for $16.95 each.

No, thats not ones I put on.

I like mine better.

I'll also use plastic "tie-ties" to keep the valve's open during operation.

The fuel shut off valves do come in handy. ;)!

Got the sled back last night.Dealer changed plugs and had to replace battery.they told me the battery would not hold it's charge.Reason given it was proberbly not fully charged when put away.On the flip side there was no charge for this dealer visit.Sled sounds great ! ;)!
