If the guys you ride with follow close enough to hit you because of engine braking you need to find new riding partners. That's just S-T-U-P-I-D!!!!

The thing is, you ride these things different than 2 strokes, that's all. With a 2 stroke you are either full throttle or no throttle through the twisties. With the 4 strokes you just never reall totally let off the throttle. To be honest I have never even noticed the engine braking thing. But then I don't ride standing up either. That doesn't seem to work well at 70 - 100 MPH.

Sorry, not sure I understand why increasing idle helps soften engine braking.
Can someone give me a little 101 on the relationship and how it is tied together. Does this also link to the primary clutch as I had heard that changing the primary out for a softer spring helps with braking without affecting overall performance.
Thanks
Dave

Because when you let off the throttle the engine won't drop down as far in the RPM's which of course adds to the engine braking. The lower the RPM's the more drag that's put on the drive train.daveh said:Sorry, not sure I understand why increasing idle helps soften engine braking.

Hey Apexer1, people were just saying that they thought the E. B. was more of a good thing than a bad thing, you shouldn't get in our face for our opinion. No room for insults on this site .By the way, I've come from a 2 stroke to the four stroke and I wouldn't change the E.B. at all-And that's the TRUTH!

Sorry guys didn't mean to get into anybodys face just thought someone would appreciate some no cost fix.
I might have been alittle harsh on the (lets be honest) But look at the time on my first post it was at 1:23pm. By 2:57pm i got bashed by about 8 people. 1 1/2hrs your telling me that they went right out after they read my first post and tryed my idea and then came back in and left a reply . Sorry i thought i was being insulted.
I think alot of people have a problem with the quick deceleration of the new apex. I hope it works ok for them.

I'm with you apexer1. These guys say they wont ride without EB then others say it goes away after 2500 miles, what will they do? not ride it? Why is it no other brand riders have ever ever asked for EB? Because it is more of a nuissance than not. The mindset of the very brand loyal is that this is now a yamaha trait and to be adored. Whatever, just dont slam those of us who dont like it. I can live with it, but I dont have to like it. apxer1, talk to about this $100 thingy you got going on?
I agree the engine braking takes getting used too, but I personally like it also. But my sleds idles already around 1600 so maybe I haven't noticed. I'm still waiting for the

Come on, why you holding out??
Does it have anything to do with reaching over and hitting your buddies kill switch?

last time I checked the reason you let off the throttle is to slow down? is it not, so the four stroke motor is a huge advantage. If you don't like it stay on the gas!! ![4strokes :4STroke: :4STroke:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/4strokes.gif)

Now that's a good one. Its tough to get used to the EB because for so long we could just drop the gas coming in to a corner and pin it leaving the corner. The tight powerband of a two stroke and the lack of compression made it easy for us to be sloppy on and off the gas. I raced DIRT modifieds for several years. You're talking about an 800 HP car that only weighs 2000 lbs and has 18 in wide rear tires. I learned to go "easy" on the gas, as these monsters will light up the tires at any speed, anywhere on the track. Its the same with the 4 strokes. That torque has to be respected, and you can't be lazy on and off the gas. Doesn't mean its a good or bad thing, its just different and if that makes my Yammi sled unique.... perfect!

I dont see how raising the idle can help engine braking. I do know that raising the idle can cause hard starting on a Yamaha 4 stroke. Also, if your engine braking is much less at 2500 miles, Id say you have lost some compression. To me, thats not good.

The engine breaking is just the engine trying to return to a set RPM. The 4 strokes get there quick giving you some hard engine breaking. As the engines breaks in there is less friction (drag) in the engine that is pulling the engine back to idle. Try this ! Next time you are rideing and the engine is breaking hard just put a tiny bit of throttle on and notice the breaking soften. This will also work by just setting the idle up as stated. Some may want to do this to reduce the break effect some like it the way it is. It's up to the rider. I love the break on the trail and lake but not in the woods when I am standing up or nealing on the seat. Hope this helps.

4 strokes have engine breaking because they have valves instead of ports. Most of the time I enjoy the benefits of it. It does take time to get used to.Slush Monster said:Engine breaking is just the engine trying to return to a set RPM. The 4 strokes get there quick giving you some hard engine breaking. I like the EB, but my friends hate the fact I rarely use the brake. They like to see my break light when we are riding hard. It helps to warn about the things ahead.
