I was on a remote sled trip last week and on the last day had the fuel pump relay froze up and wouldn't start. I read on the forums before to try pouring hot water over it. Well I was very happy that that worked. Yesterday I went to the local Yamaha dealer and picked up a new solid state one to replace it and they gave me an interesting tip that I will be trying. With your old relay if it is still good put it in a bag of rice like you would a cell phone if you got it wet and leave it to dry out completely. After it is dry tape off the prongs and spray paint the relay to seal it from moisture. Should work the same as the new solid state relay. They claimed the only real difference between the two relay's is the red ones are sealed and the black ones were not

Not even close to being true. There is a big difference between semiconductor technology and a mechanical contact/coil type device.

So if I tried this do you think I would have a false sense of security or would sealing it up when it's dry work?

The REAL problem with the original relay is that when it is colder, the magnet inside is not strong enough on just battery power to make full contact. Some have taken these apart and there was no moisture. Just a bad design for the application. The solid state relay is not affected by the temperature.

The solid state relay's electronic components are most likely encapsulated in a block of potting compound which seals it so moisture is never an issue. This process can't be done on a mechanical relay due to the moving contact. The only way to completely eliminate moisture in a mechanical relay would be to seal the contacts in a vacuum. All materials including electronics are temperature sensitive and typically the colder the temperature the "stiffer" the material becomes. Mechanical devices tend to be more sensitive to temperature change than electronic semiconductors. Most electronic devices are also put through accelerated life tests that vary temperature and humidity so they are more reliable when put to use in harsh environments.

Had to do the hot water thing before as well, a last resort is straight up good old fashion urine
Solid State relays-
Anyone got a part #, most dealers or auto places carry them?
Like to install + have a back up one handy just in case.
Thanks

Hey porkchop, I,m assuming it,s the same part # as the one used on the Apex.
Here,s the YAMAHA part # for the solid state one used on the Apex. 8GN-81950-00-00
Google the number, they are about 12 bucks each. I bought 4 LOL
I to replace each of the other same relays, and 1 spare.

And I don't think this one is available from an auto parts places as it seems to be exclusive to Yamaha applications. In a pinch, you can get this from auto parts stores # 203-0133 from Beck/Arnley. It works but you won't be able to use the stock holder so you'll have to use a zip tie.
And I doubt very much you'll need a backup anymore
