Guys...

not sure if anyone else saw this...but i just checked that part number for relay on fiche...

sure enough the part number has been updated to a new number,so Im wondering if they had enough failures for them to replace it with a better/new one?....hope so.

New number:
#8FP-81950-01-00

Dan

TK's 4 THE HEADS UP, Your probably right on why a new number, those things are only about $10 to but a real pain to change in the cold.

Anyone call Yamaha to hear what they say about this problem? We just had two out of three that wouldn't start this weekend in -10 temps!

I think I would try to take them all out remembering where each one went of course. Take them in the house place them on a heating vent and dry them out completly. They must have some condensation in them to get sticky only in cold weather. Once I was satisfied they were dried out try applying a layer of silicone where there is any kind of seam to keep them dry. If there is no seam they must have been built in a high humidity enviroment like the island of japan and when cold it condenses and sticks. Worth a try if there is some kind of seam. If they were built with no seam one could drill a very small hole in the casing dry them out completly and seal while still hot and dry with silicone.

Just spoke to my dealer, who was aware of the situation as soon as I mentioned the circumstances....In any event, he say the 'new' part # will again be superceded by ANOTHER part #...... Should be avail in the next 2 weeks.

Says they have had 6 calls this week on just the fuel relay.... :o|

Glad it's the bro's and not MY sled!

For you guys that have changed it. Can you confirm if it is the relay right up against the tunnel?

It sounds like we all need to be carrying an extra one with us.

One thing I find rather odd though. Since 3 of the relays are the identical part number (8FP-81950-01-00) I would expect all 3 to be prone to the same cold temperature/moisture problems. What do the other relays operate (what isn't working then they freeze up)?

That's like asking how they got the caramel in the Caramilk bar??!!! One of life's great mysterys.

In all seriousness, you are correct, I am not sure why it works when you switch relays...

cold start

this is all good info as i had the same issues and blew heat on that side only because it was the side away from the wall of the trailer, it then ran......later. It did it again to unload out of the trailer when got home. I went to start it 2 days later and it fired right up??? Maybe when you drag it out of the trailer it tends to jar something. I now need heat, a BIG hammer and a spare relay to go have fun?

fuel pump relay

Mine failed for a second time, changed it with a new one that I had just purchased, part #8FP-81950-01 sled started right up, the relay position was the one closest to the tunnel. I've talked to Yamaha about this and they are aware of the problem, whats concerns me is why they are not recalling these relays, weekends and cross country trips could be ruined.
I was traveling from Marquette, MI to Paridise, MI when mine failed. :ORC

I found some styrofoam around the garage , I cut it wider and longer than the solenoid. Than I carved the inside out with an exacto knife , the solenoid fit neatly inside. I thin cut a thin layer of styrofoam for the side cover. Placed 2 elastic bands around it to hold the cover in place. I have gone out since than in -35c and so far, have had no trouble with the solenoid. The blue or pink styrofoam cuts and sands smooth.

I posted some info in another thread (need a fix section) I'll copy here:

I've had no problems with my relays, but one thing I noticed tonight: For some reason there is a mist of water spray somehow coating the back of the clutch and coating these relays.

It seems to be melted snow dripping off the exhaust, getting thrown up behind the motor and misting out of the gaps in the exhaust shield onto to the secondary and blown everywhere from there.

After spending many years packaging military electronic systems, my experience suggests that plastic housed relays should be kept as dry as possible (I have never seen any that can handle getting wet on a regular basis combined with freezing temperatures - of course our reliability requirements were a little more demanding).

BTW, the fuel pump relay on my sled is the 2nd closest to the tunnel (at least this is the once clicking when the pump goes on and off with the key).

So - I wonder if we could come up with some way to reduce the amount of water getting to/around the solenoid. I suspect if it was kept reasonably dry we wouldn't have any trouble. I also suspect that if these things are constantly being sprayed with a fine mist of water that they will eventually fail (unless the new ones include some sort of heating element to help them dry out).

Also its interesting that rlbock's relay was the one closest to the tunnel. That one on my sled for certain does not click when I turn the key but the next one over does.

Rex, didn't notice any moisture around relays, but the sled sat all night after running 200 miles that day earlier. I will double check the relay that's closest to the tunnel to confirm that it is controlling the fuel pump, it's the one I changed but I might have bumped the others enough to free up a sticking relay. It might be I change one that didn't need to be changed, my sled is up north so I will check this weekend, there are three relays in that bank that are the same.

My dealer says it is the second one from the tunnel but hes been wrong before.Started my sled in -35c a few times this year with no problems.Yesterday it was -33c and I halled it 150klms. in the back of my truck @ 115klms/h and it still started. It took three tries but it started fine.Nevre had a relay problem but do carry a spare one.

In Quebec last week all three of us Yami guys had this problem. We were able to get them in a garage and we put some heat to the side of the machine for about 10 minutes and all three fired right up. The other two guys laughed at me because they couldn't believe that I knew about this problem and how to fix it. Now they think I know everything about these machines. I told them to get on this site and start learning about their machines. They are X Skidoo guys and they new a lot about their old Skidoos but haven't taken the time to get to know these Apex's. This site just rocks!
