Has anyone experimented with cutting open the stock muffler and modifying the guts to increase the hp? It wouldn't be too difficult to open it up with a cutting wheel. I just wouldn't know exactly how to proceed beyond this. Anyone have some ideas? I'm willing to experiment on mine since I have an extra one. Thanks!

If i remember correct. Ulmer racing was doing this mod to the stock mufflers.
Not sure on his results. Maybe he will chime in?

I'm curious what is involved. I think I'll do a little research about mufflers in general and see what I can learn.Schmidt Brothers also offers modification of the stock muffler.
It's big so that alone should help make it easier to get quiet and deep sounding. Interesting project!

I never opened up one of these mufflers but I did do some experimenting on my Harley's exhaust. The newer Harley exhaust systems are to quiet so I pulled the mufflers and gutted the baffle. It did make it louder but the first time out I noticed a significant amount of low end torque loss which is a direct result of decreased back pressure. With the baffles out I wasn't happy with the sound or torque loss so I customized several different baffles in an attempt to fine tune it. I came close with the stock mufflers but in the end still wasn't happy so I purchased a set of Vance and Hines and got what I was looking for in both sound and performance. Exhaust tuning can be somewhat difficult without the proper knowledge and means of testing performance. I now leave it to the exhaust experts to develop high performance exhaust systems. It's much easier to let them do the work.

Yup it is hard to get them right. We used to gut all the mufflers on the rx's and the apex's but 1" of too little baffle left or the crossover cut out and the drone was excruciating and the low end would suffer. You are out a stock muffler which cost more that an aftermarket. You are better off finding one you like the DB and sound of and buying it vs all the work to do them.
