I found a hauck power yamaha fuel accelerator and ram air lid for $250. Is it worth the money? It is one year old. He said he bought them last year for $550 but just sold the sled. I see they clame 6 to 8 hp with this but some people say it is junk. Please help. What do you think? Thank you, Travis

Well you can go onto Hauck's site and verify what these parts would cost new. He's about right, with shipping, etc.
The fuel accellerators are nice (and necessary really) once you start putting more oxygen into the motor, like a ram air will do. Now I am not endorsing the 6 - 8 hp claim with a ram air, I do not think it's that high. But with the ram air and if you do any exhaust modding, you will need more fuel -- the fuel accellerator will do that for you.
There are other fuel compensator options out there, so check around. The power commanders are another alternative and have more adjustment capability, just fyi. But the hauck will get the job done bottom line.
Here is another ram air option off fleabay:

Holes in the airbox lid do not increase intake pressure unless you can approach 200 mph.

Well, 170+ mph-ish is what I heard. But right, these sleds will never achieve a true "ram air" effect, as the theory behind the ram air goes. Need super high speeds to achieve the necessary pressures.

I've always heard on the Apex that sticking with stock airbox and modifying it has larger gains than K&N's or aftermarket airbox. Ulmer has tested and dyno proved it.

So I will tell you what is going on. I have a 06 Apex 4900 miles stock with gutted exhaust, Ulmer stage 2 clutch kit, 23t gear and 144 1.4 studs. My buddy has a 06 Apex GT all stock but studs,23t gear and ram air lid. When he first bought it (January 2011) I could beat him. He would get me by a sled out of the hole and then I would pass him back around 50 mph. I am about 35 lbs lighter than him. I dont know when it happened but this summer I noticed I was missing all but 3 track clips. I dont know if that would slow me down or not. I just put all new track clips on last week. I want to make sure I beat him this winter. That is why I am asking about the ram air lid and haulk fuel controler. It is only $250 but I dont want to wast my money if it will not help. What do you think?

It will sound faster,i had the complete hauck exhaust and his fuel controller, sold to me by keith woods aks woody,he ownes a yamaha dealership here in maine, and does have a lot of very fast yamaha sleds, most are very modified,by his owne hand, and he sells what he calls his powerup kit, well,i fell for it,i even had him try and tune it for me,thinking maybe i was way off base on my tuning,i was not,in fact on my attack,i lost 2 mph, with his kit, compared to my stock set up,i was already running, and we did two days of back to back testing on a test track, with timers and radar and gps. But if it makes you feel better,at least it sounds cool...

Missing clips will kill your top end.

Hauck fuel controller and Power Commander need to be used with an Air/Fuel gauge.
If I remember....Apex are at the top at 12,8 or 12,9 on the A/F.

Would an a/f gauge be helpful, I'd say yes. Necessary? No.
99% of power commander users are not using an a/f guage.

There seems to be a great deal of misconception about ramair effect and where it does and does not come into play. I can tell all of you that from "my experiance" that it starts coming into play around 60-70 mph. The details are beyond this thread and do not want to hijack. But, if any of you doubts this, do what we all have done as kids and stick your hand out the window of a moving vehicle at speed. First against the wind and them flat (like a knife) slicing through the wind. Definite difference in pressure applied to your hand. The problem with the apex intake is that it isn't oriented at an angle perpendicular to the oncoming wind blast. Its at more of a horizontal angle which doesn't utilize the "free" pressure very well. Still, its better than completely closed off.
