I just went to grease my one year old jackshaft bearing and found that the tapered collar has pulled itself into the bearing to the point where you can't reach the notches to remove it. The nut was still tight on the threads but nowhere near being seated. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on how to get it off without removing chaincase? Figures, this was the last thing I had to do before being ready to ride.

grease the bearing, put some loctite on the threads and re-tighten. i agree it dont look right but i cant see it doing any harm as long as it stays tight. check it after a few rides to be sure.

Might be worth a try but I think the threads end before the nut would seat against the bearing. My gut tells me that this thing is wedged in there so tight that the nut is just along for the ride now. I also think that if I remove the shaft I will destroy either the bearing, the collar or both trying to separate them. Last year I had the opposite problem where the nut came off- I hate this design!

It is possible that the bearing (aftermarket I'm assuming by the blue seal) is too large. Or it doesn't have the taper it's supposed to have.

It is aftermarket (Royal Distributing) but it did have the taper and the collar was slightly proud of the bearing when installed or my tool would not have worked. I can't figure out how it would get pulled in like that with no torque from the nut.

It's got to be out of specs. There's no way it could pull through like that if was right.

Is it possible that when you had the problem last year the shaft spun and became worn?

No, I caught it pretty early and the shaft was in good shape. It almost makes me want to go back to the old collar with no nut- never had any problem with it.
It has to be the dumb engieering feat yamaha ever came up with. Get a brg mfg to make a brg to the size of the shaft, & make it grease able. Its not rocket science. Sorry, not really help on how to get it out. Other than like you said in taking it all apart.

The first thing that I thought of when I saw the blue seal was "ALL BALLS" and the "Royal distributing " words confirmed it. It does look strange but by the look of it, it is definately centered and I don't think it will move. I agree with grader, drive it and keep an eye on it and see how it preforms because you may damage some stuff if you pull it apart. If you don't feel comfortable with that you will have to replace it.

Correct me if I am wrong but thats A lock nut with A stainless Lock inside the nut the nuts threads do not end. Is it possible you never tightened it enough and it never locked? I believe it'll tighten way further than you realize.

If you look at the second picture you can see the end of the threads (on the collar) and I think the nut would stop there before seating against the bearing. And I know that I got some good torque on it because it had already come loose once and I wanted to make sure. As much as I hate it I will probably ride it as is and keep an eye on it because it does feel very solid and I know as soon as I take it apart I'll be replacing about $100 worth of parts (unless the shaft is pooched too, and then big bucks).

My driveshaft bearing has a metal seal that is hard to remove so I drilled a small hole in it and grease it with a needle tip. The jackshaft bearing has plastic seals that are easier to remove so I just pack it and put the seal back on. Check out the post below:
