Anybody notice on the vector and Rage you can turn on the headlights without turning the engine on? That would sure come in handy on my Warrior. I wonder if it can be retro fitted?
Yes you'd have to run power from the ignition to the head lights > Not sure what steps you'd need to take. But here is a wire on the back of the key that is hot when both the Kill switch and key are turned on. You could get power there. I believe they have them off so all the power from the battery is used to fire the engine

The lights stayed off when I started my '03 on a cold day then came on a minute later but it hasn't happened again. Does anyone know how to do this on purpose? (keep the lights off at idle)

It would really be cool if you could see your odometer without starting the motor

I had the same thing happen too Acrtic. Sled running, no lights or gage. Shutdown and back on, then I had the gage, one more time and I had everything. I just attributed it to moisture in the relays. Never happend again.
As for lights on without the engine, Just check out the wireing for the headlight relay. Having that feature though, you would have to be careful of just hitting the kill switch and not shutting off the key. I can forsee lots of dead batteries. :ORC

The exact same thing happened to me once with my 03. Started it in the morning and it had no headlights or gauge. After a few more starts everything was working. Has not happened since. Wierd!

The no headlights and guage deals seem to happen in extremely cold temperatures at start-up. It is do to the relays being frozen due to the cold and moisture. They usually seem to come on in a short amount of time or after a restart.
Silverbullet on the 05 RS series sleds you will be able to turn on the gauge without the engine running. I would assume this technology will get to the RX models in the following year.

I would install a separate switch to turn on the lights, instead of the ignition. It would be good for safety, if you stop in low visability situations, if a sled is approaching.

I had to stop several times for buddies sleds that needed attention at night. Because of the extended idle time, I found myself packing snow on my running boards to keep my Warrior cool. It would be nice to be able to simply turn on the lights for 10 miutes or so without the other hassles.

Speedo and Headlight
There are a couple relays that keep the headlight and speedo shut down till 2-3 seconds after the sled starts. This is meant to get all juice to the starter motor and ignition system. When it is cold, the relays work slower and it may take longer for the lights and speedo to kick on. If it takes too long, and is a prolonged problem, have your yamaha dealer replace the relays, they should do that for free no matter when they fail, as it happened on SRX's quite a bit when they first did this. Yamaha will be good for it.
Thanks,
Steve
