while performing my preseason service I discovered loose and broken heat shields on the exhaust. This is the second time around on this issue the first was covered by warr, this time might not be. I am wondering if anyone has removed the shields alltogether and what thier expirience was ? I dont think the exhaust would ever get hot enough to cook the track but this must be why Yamaha placed them there. :? :(

Thanks Dano,
Ya know the shields are the only problem I had in 4500 miles of riding last season and I dont think Yamaha has changed a thing for 04 . There must have been a fair number of failures last year dont you think ?
I just cant see replacing the shields if all they're going to do is break again
but of course I dont want to cause any additional problems as a result of taking them off. Its kinda like when the heat shield fall off the exhaust of your car and you just leave it off without any problems.

Birdman, Last year mine cracked too,but it was only at the very front of the shield so i just broke it off. is this where yours is broke too?

Snowman,
Last year I had the rear most heat shield cracked and was replaced under warr. This season I find that one of the two front heat shields is broken
(whats broken is the bracket that that holds the shield to the pipe) I could have it welded but It seems that this will be a on going problem and I am thinking of removing them totally. If your sled has a little rattle or vibration this is likely the cause.
