There has been talk about bottoming on the Apex GT . I am also having this problem only on the big holes or if I get some air . Has anyone been able to get the heavy spring and try it yet ? I weight 180 with gear . I will probably try heavy spring but I don't want to ruin the ride . This sled is awesome on the rough trails . If someone has tried the heavy spring let me know .

Bozzman,
At 180 I wouldn't think you would be bottoming at all. What do you have the sag set at? According to the shop manual (from the dealer) the sled comes with the preload set for a 200# rider so if any thing I would think it would have been a bit stiff???? Did the dealer reduce preload for you? There is a pretty good thread on setting sag if you haven't set or checked the sag give that a try before spending 100 bucks just to get a rough ride.

Why would anyone buy the new Ohlin spring. If my new sled bottoms out when adjusted correctly I want Yamaha to fix it. I would not purchase a new spring. I go 135 miles on my GT and there was too much snow to screw around with any settings on the trail. I bottomed out 50 times in 4" of good snow on 1-2' bumps. It only bottoms when your compressed and hit bump #2 on the top. That tells me the shock is not rebounding fast enough (I think). I found in the stiff mode on the GT it was better but still bottomed out. It also wants to toss you over the bars on the odd bumps. I am going to work on this after I get my exchanger welded up and my wheels replaced and my reverse gears replaced..... ARghhhh

Wow sorry to hear about all your problems,i hope i dont have some of them too, that would put a damper on my faith in my new sled,as i had much worse last year w/my poo, heck i had the 03 rx1 but other than a rough ride thru the chop and some oil usage it was sweet, well hope you get it all worked out,oh ya did yammi cover the heat exchanger or say you did the damage??

Why would you buy a new spring! Ya know that's a good point if I weighed 185 and I could not get the proper sag or bottom constantly, the manual says the stock spring should be good for 240 pounds. If it's not the dealer/Yamaha should replace it, but then you would get another stock spring that isn't stiff enough??

Its my understanding the GT has the compression adjustment on the handlebars and manual rebound adjustment on the shock, wouldnt it make sense to try to adjust that before demanding yamaha fix the sled? After riding trails both groomed and ungroomed with a hard base I whacked some ditches and holes with my RTX. For me the overall ride is perfect but it does bottom easily on holes and square edge bumps, I have the cam on the stiffest setting. I was thinking it needs more high speed compression dampening, the low speed is real good.

I also think the shock needs more high speed compression dampening. I adjusted the preload on spring to max to see if that would help but it didn't make much of difference . I am going to try spring before I try valving change . At least with spring if it ruins the ride I can take it off. This machine is great in rough trails it is just the big holes with square edges and if you do any jumping it bottoms . I had a Rev 800x last year and it would bottom on the square edge stuff also so it isnt just a Yamaha problem . How was the RX-1 last year as far as the suspension being to soft? I am not sure if a good shock guy could stiffen up the high speed valving without making the low speed stiff . If making the shock stiffer ruins the ride it is not worth it I can live with the bottoming . I don't mind trying different things to improve the sled that is part of the fun for me .

I think small bump ride quality will suffer with the stiffer spring.

I am thinking that small bump performance will decrease also but I can put stock spring back on if that happens . I am worried if I try to have the shock revalved and they make it to stiff that will also ruin the ride and that won't be so easy to fix . I know on some motocross bikes the stiffer springs help the ride and suspension action . I can live with it the way it is if I have to I just want to play around with it to see if I can have the best of both worlds great ride with very little bottoming . I had a 2003 Firecat 700 sno-pro and it would never bottom out but it rode rough. My 2005 REV 800x rode good but it bottomed fairly easy also . So maybe it is hard to have both .
