Heavy Springs?

Does anyone know if Yamaha makes a heavier torsion spring for the XTX? The only reason I ask is that mine seem to get getting sacked after only 1200 miles. I am about 210 lbs in gear and tend to be kinda hard on my sled. I like to jump a fair amount (not huge) and ride rough trails/ditchbang. I don't find myself feeling like I'm bottoming out too much, but the sag of the sled's suspension at rest in the garage (no ice, etc.) seems excessive (4-5"). This is with the adjusters set on "heavy" or highest setting. Comments?

I'm about 215 with gear and I've noticed the same thing (1,100 miles). Always pulling up on the rear end when I park it.

On the flip side the ride seems to be a little more cush and I almost never bottom out.

I think it's pretty normal on all sleds.

did you look in the port yamaha parts fishie

my torsion springs did this last year also......I bought the heavier springs, they didn't match my shock valving and made for a very poor ride.

I bent my stock springs in a press, changing the opening angle.....seems crazy I know, it worked. Search for the thread.

Nytromaniac found some aftermarket preload cam adjusters, they add some additional tension also. I forget the name, "x click" I think.

when the springs sag out they can sometimes cause the ride to be harsh, the sled is couples easier on series of small bumps. XTX couples with rods but the theory is the same. Our Nytro's are all about the balance ya know.

Hygear has torsion spring spacers that will fix your problem. I weigh 195lbs and was running on the highest setting, I am now running on the softest setting.

They basically replace the bushing on the upper shaft that the Torsion spring center rides on, taking out most of the play. I was always annoyed by the spring slop anyways.

im in the 220lb range and i have the same problem i had a post on her about 2 months ago and i got this pm. i havent bought the springs yet (there having layoff at my work so not spending money) but i plan on buying them over the summer.

I will have the following springs available.

1600 rate:

1900 rate:

2200 rate:

the stock ones are 1400 rate.

deanhell,

I don't have any miles on them yet. I don't see where a wear issue would occur other than working the spring harder.

I have 1600 rate springs available currently. It would take me a week or so to get anything heavier than that right now.

has anyone upgraded and what was the difference after you added them? I know mine sags but it doesnt seem to bottom out either. I have always heard more travel is better???

Sag doesn't affect travel. The proper amount of sag is essential to allow suspension drop and keep the track on the snow. Excessive sag and too little sag should both be addressed and corrected. Sag should be measured with a seated rider. That's the only time it matters.

Heavy springs will increase the rebound rate of the shocks unless re-valved. The XTX center shock rebound rate is already too fast in my book. If more guys would focus on shocks rather than springs they'd have more fun on their sleds. They bottom out and their response is to tighten their springs. Not good.

My XTX used to have inconsistent sag when sitting riderless. Sometimes it would sit tall and others not. It did not impact the sag with me on board. I added Hygear spring spacers and now the suspension sits tall all the time now when sitting riderless. That's a sign that the springs aren't bound as far as I can tell. The torsion springs are now working properly and I, like LeeKo, can run at a softer preload setting. I can't figure out why Yamaha allows the springs to tilt like they do. It makes no sense.

6'3" 274lbs 2100 springs and the hygear sport trail package = no bump limit and a great ride.

Im glad im not the only one with different ride heights. Sometimes it sits about 4 inches lower than normal. I thought my shock was going bad on me. When riding I feel no difference.

Different ride height here too every time I look at it.

Glad I found this thread as I always found the torsion springs suspect and didn't know the spacers were available. Just ordered a set as I would like it sitting higher without adding heavier springs and there is just too much give in the stock spacers.
