Helix damaged

2008 Venture Lite:
My set up is a Stage II Helix, heavier wts in the heel and comfort clutch spring in the Primary from Schmidt Bros . (I guess basically the Comfort clutch with the Stage II add-on that they sell)

I have damage to my Helix on the outside where it slides into the secondary and don't know what caused it; unless something got between the two sliding parts and actually put a groove in the surface leaving metal scraps. Or could a clutch overheat and cause binding and damage? I don't have it apart yet so I don't know if the ramps and secondary are damaged or not. Any thoughts on what could have caused this? If it is only damaged on the outside, would it still be useable or garbage?

Maybe a broken spring piece got in there?Check the bushing when you take it apart.I think if you polish the gouges out and there isnt any high spots it should still work fine.

My circlip broke and the helix went against the flange bolts on the bearing and tore up the bottom of the helix and also got damage on the outside where it goes into the secondary. I haven't been able to get it out of the secondary yet to inspect the secondary - hopefully no damage there. Any tips on getting it out of the secondary? The bottom part seems to be stuck to the secondary. Hard lesson learned for sure as I didn't bother to replace the circlip when I installed my new helix last year- $130! Anyway, I still got the OEM helix if the secondary is okay.
 
As long as it was just the clip that broke I think you will be okay but you need to inspect the groove clip goes on.Groove must be square and sharp edged or even a new clip will come out.If secondary is not salvageable I would highly consider getting a new style reverse secondary so this never can happen again.

Good point about the groove - thanks.
Where would I come by a reverse secondary?
Any modifications required to install It?
 
That might have to be a longer term mod than I want to get into now , i.e having to source the parts, machining, etc. thanks again for your help.
Have to go and get it apart and assess the damage.

BTW, it is interesting that Yamaha is still using the older style secondary on the Phazer - I just checked the fiche on Port Y.
 
Up to you.At least you know you arent the only one who had trouble with that clip!

I wonder to.Unless they have a bunch left over it makes no sense to be making different parts that do same job or even better.
 
Had same problem on phazer mountain a couple seasons ago .... sucked to have a $2 part screw up a nice ride in the back of Gros Morne. Rode sled out ... didn't damage anything as the wear from the bolt heads was pretty even. Popped a new circlip on and way to go.

You were fortunate! My secondary (both sheaves) is toast - I can't say I didn't know - I should have listened to the folks on here!
Bad way to start the season for sure.

Question: If I want to source used parts, are there any sleds from the past that would have the same clutch as the Phazer/Venture Lite?
 
Had the same thing happen last year. Destroyed the helix. Fixed the groove with a hacksaw, new helix, new circlip. What a crazy bad sound when it went!
 
I think the 2st Phazer,enticer,excell maybe even bravo.But if sourcing a secondary I bet a revers one is just as cheap and more around.
